Compressor suggestions?

I've been following with interest.

I am a multi instrumentalist and I'm looking for a compressor as a front end for my bass guitar before going into my amp for live work and with perhaps a dual mono or stereo link for compressing Vocals going into my DAW. I'm more than happy with the compression software on my computer for everything else.

I'm currently messing around with a Joe Meek optical compressor, for my bass front end but not totally happy with it for vocals, also its not in stereo

I'm thinking about buying a DBX 118 I've seen, any suggestions?

Hey surf's up - this thread is about a year old dude :)

I recently had a chance to A/B my dbx 119 (it's the same thing as the 118) with some bass, vocal and guitar tracks. First off, when the compression is set to 1.0, and the threshold very high, they will pass signal true to the source - which is a good thing. I could not hear any degredation of the signal with my monitors. The compression behaviour is apparently exactly the same as the expensive and widely used dbx 160VU. So, although there are no attack and release attenuators, the compression you get is pretty musical. If set very lightly (1.0 to 2.0 ratio with a threshold that just tickles the signal) you can get subtle, effective compression that sounds pretty good on vocals. These units can also squash the hell out of things, yeilding some interesting effects; ive done that on bass/guitar/drums.

Hey no problem. You might also want to check out the symetrix 501. Several people on this BBS have use that with excellent results on bass and vocals. The build quality is rugged - great for live use.
