hey all.

Can anybody help me with choosing some compressors? Need two compressors for the following applications:

1) A good all around compressor for tracking vocals. Would be nice if it's versatile enough to use on other acoustic instruments when needed.
2) Compressor for stereo bass coming out of a keyboard. All sorts of sounds coming out of this thing, but mostly synth bass and it can go deeeeeep at times. The keyboardist can a bit excited, and something is needed to tame the dynamics a bit.

looking to spend <$125 per channel if that's possible.

thanks for any help in advance :D

FMR's RNC. About $180?

Or about $125 used. It is stereo, but not dual mono. For voice. Bass not so good a choice. I'd consider either a pair of DBX 160 (x, xt, or a -- your choice) or a pair of Symetrix 501s for bass. The Symetrix units are less expensive than the DBX and can be linked. Make sure you get a pair of the same model 501s if you go that route - there were several variations. Drawmer may also have a less expensive model that would work for what you want.

If you can go with 2 different units, (3-4 channels total)
I would definitely say go with the RNC for vocals and acoustic instruments, and either the Symetrix 501s, Dbx 160 models for Bass or I would also suggest the ART Pro VLA for Bass. It is an Optical based comp that also works well for low frequency compression.

You should be able to come in around the $125 a channel for the VLA and around $130 total for the RNC.

Both good suggestions.... I like the DBX's if you can afford 'em. Should be around $200 used

thanks for the suggestions guys. I think i'll start looking for a RNC and a VLA.

I use both the RNC and VLA and think having both is a good idea. I like the VLA even more than I thought I would.

the VLA is $200 right now at sweetwater...

That is a really good deal for a new VLA.
I paid nearly that for used!
I've got 3 of them!

Check out the VLA II for $100 more before pulling the trigger on the discontinued model... not saying that's it's not a great deal... but you may want to see what's replacing it...
