RNC from FMR Audio (http://fmraudio.com)

Flat out to 200KHz, no color.

its in my sig. i dont want it completly plain....just something in between..i dont know..wat would u guys recommend for vocals? hiphop vocals?

Are you sure you even need a compressor? What would you use it for? What part of your vocal recording chain is sitting up and asking for compression?

Hopefully you're not simply wanting one because everyone else says you need one......

So the real question is.....What would you use it for?

The reason I ask is because you already use an SM7B...this is one of the most intimate mics around and also one of the weakest as far as signal goes. You can pretty much control everything you need control of simply by 'working' this particular mic. I dont think I've ever used a compressor with this mic....except once with that 'screamer guy'.......uuggghhh.

what do u mean by using this mic...

first of all i dont perticularly like it...it makes my voice a bit dull and hallow so i might be buying a new one in the futur...

i have always used compression with cool edit (dynamic processing with a 4:1 very fast attack)...it evens out soft and load spots very nicly..but i figure a hardware compressor will do this better without changing the sound in a negative way too much..am i wrong?

i bought my samson "s-com plus" for the intention of recording hip hop vocals. i've had it for about about a month now (used it on about five sessions now) and have been very impressed by it... especially considering the price range ($120). i have nothing to compare it to, but i find it does a great job.

Hey bro, either the FMR RNC or maybe one of the little presonus ones. My ultimate advice would be to save up for an 1176 (ALL the big artists use it from 50cent to Jay-z and everyone in between, on either side, under, or above lol) IT's alot of money, but it's probably the most popular and hands down best vocal comp ever made. If you want to sound like a pro, you usually have to spend like a pro. ;)

I don't have an FMR compressor but I can say that they aren't the only thing in that price range. I have a dbx 1066 that I'm very happy with. The 160A is similar but has less features, but it sounds better. I'd just say stay above $200 and you should'nt be disappointed. A world above the Cool Edit Dynamics proccesor.

Used DBX 160x off ebay. $200. It is more useful than the RNC across many sources. I don't care for the sound of the RNC myself and sold mine.

Art Pro VLA would be another option.

I like the suggestion of the DBX 160X, or the 160XT would be good as well. I'm not a fan of the RNLA, which I bought based on the hype and then sold almost immediately. The PRO VLA is a better unit in my opinion.

Hollowdan's suggestion regarding the 1176 is great, although WAY overbudget!!!
