I'm attempting to record a simple cd for my family of my music (guitar and vocals) but am having a hard time keeping the levels even. As I understand, compression could solve my problem but I am having a hard time understanding what each parameter will do. I own a Roland VS 840EX digital station which has a compressor. Any tips or sites to refer to would be a great help.

Thanks

You did everything but describe your actual problem. The idea of a compressor is that it reduces the dynamic range of a recording. This means that loud sounds become a bit softer, and the differences between the loud and soft levels are not as big.

Christmas songs are usually quiet (???), so you should really experiment with mic placement and recording technniques to get your performance as evenly recorded as possible. Then perhaps you may not even need a compressor on your track. A compressor may not even be able to fix poorly recorded source material.

There are many home recording enthusiasts who get great results without ever turning to compressors for help.

perhaps post a .mp3 of what your working and we could nudge you in the right direction.
