Compression use

Here goes everyone.........
Is it better to use compression as you record or at mix-down. I'm sure everyone has a different opinion....

I do both.
I use compression when tracking just about everything, to prevent unruly volume spikes, and make things easier to mix. After I mixdown, I take it to a local studio, and spend $30 to have him run it through his $3000 tube compressor. You wouldn't believe the difference it makes.

I guess I will have to just experiment and find out what's best by the process of elimination.......
