Despite all of the hullabaloo on compression and standard settings, wouldnt it just be best to "HEAR" the effects when you use dynamics processors instead of tweaking with the finer details on the knobs? Dont' get me wrong, but some people may get caught up in setting the compressors "just right" and forgetting of how the actual sound really is.
It might be better if we use our ears more than our text book logic.

that's good advise for most of the PA engineers I see who seem to spend all their time tweeking compressors etc and never listening to the mix!!

I don't know of any serious Engineer that tweeks with out hearing

Ears are the best part!:-)

Every compresser acts differently.
Your EARS maintain. The obvious choice for descision making.

Just don't forget to listen to what you're eartweaking with the rest of the mix if it's an individual sound, and to go back and forth between comp'ed and uncomp'ed if it's a mix.And please come back tomorrow 'cause ears like bodies get tired.(yawn)Cheers!
