please explain how to use compression and the purpose and time to use it. thanks

compression is used to get a loud sound without peaking your meters. you don't want to "over-compress" you sound. (if you do that, then you will get a "squashed" sound.) and i can also be used to control to sound's peaking without affecting the sound(limiting).

Other than general level control, if a sidechain is used there can be lot's of interesting uses for a compressor such as frequency dependent control (like de-essing). You can also use them to fattenin-up thin tracks, simulate the response of a tape machine, add sustain to instruments, control the response of one intrument via the attack of another (another sidechain trick), and lots of other stuff.

Useful link there Bruce...;) All that talk about network settings and what not really explains it don't you think? :D

Just kidding. I am hooking Shailat up with Slackmaster2000 to host those articles with the mp3's that go with them on Slackman's website. Finally, the links should work full time instead of this "it worked LAST week" crap that is going on right now.

I will post when they get over there.

I can't keep up with it myself.....

Now its up at http://24.62.248.218/
Get it now in a few secs who knows what will be:eek:

Hopefully with Ed's and Slacks help they will be up in a stable place

That was GREAT!

You have no idea how helpful that was. I printed them out and will be draggin them home to practice. I am a compression idiot...NEVER use it...see it and pass right on by, however i had no idea of its usefulness. This may have solved quite a bit of my nagging problems.

You are welcome Moshe. These were great articles that can really help (obviously from the replies we have got from them over the last couple years!)

I talked to Slackman (for his permission) and decided that I would post some other articles on his site (I posted one about reverb on the bbs that would go well with your reverb article, mostly the same descriptives, but with some other useful info.....) and will probably put my original articles from the index page of this site on their too. I am gathering my thoughts on a few other useful topics and will probably start on them soon too. Hopefully Moshe, you will find the time to write some more stuff to put there.
