Hey guys,

My favorite band, The Dear Hunter... i KNOW has an amazing singer, and im really analyzing their recordings.

He recently did a project (the lead singer writes and performs basically every part aside from drums, which his brother plays), and anyways, he recently did a project where he released 36 songs at once, each belonging to a different color of the color spectrum.

9 EP's with 4 songs each each EP is a color of the color spectrum plus black and white.

But beyond that, he recorded nearly all the EP's with a different engineer/studio, but he is an engineer himself aswell.

my question is... the way his voice sounds is just full of presence and incredibly smooth.

Im uncertain if its due to sever compression.... trickery such as melodyne, or if he really is just that good.

think you could help me out? here are a few samples.

The Collapse Of The Great Tide Cliffs - YouTube

We've Got A Score To Settle - YouTube

The Dear Hunter - No God (White EP) - YouTube

enjoy!

Unless you were in the studio when it was recorded and mixed you will never know..... or if he releases that info to the public. :D:D:D

Compression doesn't make your performance sound any better. It makes the recorded track sound better. I would already rule out compression. And melodyne or not, he is still a great singer.

i know it doesnt make the performance better lol, but it can make your voice and transitions sound smoother.

and he's an incredible singer lol

Melodyne is almost impossible to tell if the engineer is good. Contrary to using Auto-Tune, the skill with Melodyne is create a performance that sounds 100% natural.

Great room + great job of recording + great musician (singer in this case) = what you're hearing!
