I am not sure bout the use of na external comp for mastering but have used the mastering tool kit to ge t great results. It has all the thingymajigs to do what you want during mastering .The only thing for me is not to be to overzelous with the settings, try to use them as little as possible if you have to use realy hard comp then may be the recording process needs to be looked at.
I made a stereo mix of my songs then sent that to the mastering room and just use the MTK MIXDOWN on the fx insert.I know this is not the answer to your question but it means that there is 1 less da/ad conversion going on and I think the 1880 is a good enough machine that smart (SIC) people like us can get some dynamite results straight out of the box. give it a go,I try to use all my external fx going into the machine ,plan what I'm after and record that so when it comes to mix mastering there is alot less work to do.It could be that I'm just lazy and can't be bothered to plug in any more leads.
let me know how you go.
