Compressers

Looking to pick up a rackmount compresser but not sure what brand i should go with and if i should go with a tubed or non tubed... ive read about some of the ones out there but am still a tad confused... anyone have an idea or name brand i should look at... cause i don't even know what brand to start looking at. Thanks
 
What is your budget? What will you be using it for?
 
basically im going to try and use for alot of things if thats possible... vocals guitars stuff like that... cant really fit a drum kit into my condo... not yet at least... my budget is no more then 600 canadian just cause im starting out with this and going to school too so eventually i know i will upgrade to even better stuff at one point in time but for now i just want some decent stuff so i can practice and shiznat...
 
How many channels of compression will you need?

That would give you 4 channels to play with. The RNC has a fairly clean/transparent compression (nice for acoustic instruments & vocals) and the RNLA adds some color/thickness to the signal (cool for vocals & electric guitars), so they compliment each other nicely.

In that pricerange, I wouldn't really consider tubes to be of any benefit. Drawmer, Aphex, and dbx all have products in that pricerange that might be worth looking at, as well.

I have my eye on an RNC and sooner or later it will be in my rack. In the meantime, I have had excellent results with a couple of other entry level rack mount compressers.

One is the BBE Maxcom, a two channel optical compressor with an auto function as well as manual controls. The other is a Lexicon MX200 effects unit with some compressor options. Each cost about $200 US. The BBE uses a real power supply and the Lexicon is powered with a wall wart.

Both units are pretty quiet and predictable. I use the Maxcom mostly as a limiter in a live rig, where it has saved my butt on a number of occasions. Both are well worth the money and do exactly what they are claimed to do.

I definatly agree, the RNC is a great place to start. Also for a single channel the API 225L is cool.
 
The API comps are great but well outside of the original posters price range once you factor in a rack. Rnc's are a good place to start, as well as some of the DBX's.
 
The RNC absolutely rules. I only have one, but I'm definitely planning on adding at least another three. Very easy to use, and really good clean compression.
I've also got a Nady CL-5000, but you can just ignore that ;).

Forgot to factor in the rack... I've had mine for so long I just put new stuff in it and don't factor it in. If you can find an old DBX 166, not the new XL model, it's a pretty cool inexpensive comp.
