How many of you compress vocals while tracking and again at mixdown?

I always use some compression when laying down vocals (male rock vox). Usually a dbx 166 (no X, no XL) around 6:1 to 10:1, or an 1176 at my buddy's studio. I've been realizing that I often re-compress at mixdown to get the lead to stand out in the mix.

Am I not doing it right while tracking? Am I going to kill the sound, or is this quite common to compress vocals twice? Actually same question for kick and snare, as I do it there too. Thanks.

yeah I do it. though I use much less on the way in than you do.

ditto.

Slight compression on the way in - crank it up in the mix. :)
