Yeah. Ditto. I read something about that the other day, and laughed a bit, started analyzing a bunch of my songs, and of them, most did have at least one spot in the chorus or verse where it wandered for two or three chords in a circle-of-fifths fashion, but two of my favorites didn't ever have anything longer than a pair of chords in a row going the same direction in fifths. I figure that's probably why they're my favorites.
Anyway, one should never write music based on trying to follow some set of arbitrary rules like doing lots of circle-of-fifths progressions.... There are, however, certain chords that naturally lead to others, of which the circle of fifths in a downward direction is just one. Recognizing those patterns can help you you compose better music, as long as you realize that (within reason) a lot of what makes music interesting is creative breaking of those rules.
