...
Here's another one for this CD I've been banging on about.

This was originally mixed to fall in line with the rest but when it came to doing vocals it's just felt boring and monotonous.
We got a bit fed up with it and ended up just stripping it back to piano.

Because this is totally the odd one out, I'd love to hear what anyone and everyone thinks.
Can he/we pull this off?

It's going bang in the middle of the album.
The fake strings at the end will almost certainly be replaced by something real.
They may even be gone by the time you hear this.

Thanks in advance folks.

I thought this was really good. I'd back off the reverb on everything just a bit. I thought it sounded nice. Just a bit heavy.

Heard a vocal artifact around 1:07 or so. little mouth click. Very small though. Harmonies were nice.

That piano sounds good. Is that digital?

So this is the same guy that sung "Richard Cory?" It IS quite different.

Hmm, I think it works. But this should really be the only song that's like this, in my opinion. It can get boring if there are too many songs like this that are four minutes long.

But it's good! :)

Indeed! It's a Yamaha CLP-840.

Negatory - This one's Pete Gardiner.

Thanks man.
There will be two piano based songs on this ten track record, but the other is a bit more upbeat.
Cheers Crows.

The link above has the new mix right? The vocal sounds dryer than I remember yesterday. To a lesser extent, so does the piano.

The bass seems rumbly today where it didn't yesterday. Did it change or are my ears different today?

The background 'oooo's' get covered up a little bit. I wonder if you could pull down the piano volume like 2 dbs when the ooo's are doing their thing and raise the oooo's 2 dbs? I think they might sit together nicely that way. Just a guess though.

Hi Trip,
Yes, the above link is updated.
The vocals and piano are slightly drier than before. I think you were definitely right about the verb.
I played with panning a little. I mean, I'm not trying to pretend there was a stage performance, but I thought I'd separate out bass/piano/vox a little in the stereo field.

Nits aside, I think the mix is much nicer having taken the verb back, so thanks for that. :)

I agree, today's mix is better to my ear than yesterday's.

I might try to find the rumble frequency in the bass - must be somewhere between 70hz and 140hz - and notch it out. I think it'd be a real good mix.

Eugh....I always have trouble with bass.
A combination of a DI bass that sounds completely unnatural without mental eq, 6" monitors, a bad environment, and apparently an unreliable ability to perceive bass level.

Thanks for pointing it out man....It is always the thing I end up guessing.

I do have a reverb on the master. It's very very subtle but maybe I should run everything except bass to the same verb on an aux instead.

PS: The ooohs are in two pairs - High and low. I totally muted the high ones by mistake.

Remix enroute. (edit : done)

Man I thought those ooo's would mesh better. But there is some sort of frequency build up when they come in. All of a sudden, at that point, the mix becomes crowded. Do you bring in something else besides the oooo's at the same time?

I hear what sounds like a bad punch at 2:42. I can hear the singer take two breaths.

Couple of clicks around 2:56 and 3:48.

No, nothing else....Just the same oohs as before.
I'll pull some low mids back.

Yeah, I know. It's actually one breath but it is an edit point. Every time I work at it I think I've fixed it then I notice it again in context later.
I'll get it......lol.

Thanks for those.

I don't think I've ever needed, or received, so much direct help in here.
It's very much appreciated, Trip.

Updated.

Nice work Steen, as always. I could use more bass here. Maybe pan off the acoustic riffs?!? Great tune. Drums??
