Hey all,

just wanted to let you know that 30 Seconds of Shame (J aka maryslittlesecret's band) has posted a remix I did of one of their songs on their mp3.com page.

www.mp3.com/30SoS

The song is called "Complete (Ether Remix) by Charger" and it's at the bottom of the page. Please check it out and gimme comments.

For those who care about the technical details:
I took J's main vocal track from the song "Complete," chopped it up into manageable phrases, and threw them into FruityLoops. I built up the remix using Fruity synths and effects, including BeepMap, 3xOsc, and Plucked synths, and the Fruity Granulizer effec, plus a bunch of random samples. There's also some Fruity Delay on the drum line that's running through a Buzz machine distortion effect. I also used a freeware Piano soundfont in there, and a little L1 to top it off. The entire thing was done in fruity, except for loop editing and chopping, which was done in Pro Tools.

Well, I just got done writting a major reply and it was washed out before it was posted.

I'll give you the jist.

Great job.
Nice vision
The original had big vocal placemant probs
Yours had one spot (aroung3:50)
The arrangment could have gotten heavier with a hint of the original before going moody and sonic around 410 or so.

I give you props on you vision and tech skills!! You captured the essence and made your own.

Time well spent in "the muse"

Peace,
Theron.

Dude,

This is off the hook, I'm downloading this one. Its totally sweet how you manipulated the delivery.

Tight.

funk on!

Thanks folks...

Kramer: Thanks, I'm not sure if you were listening to the original version (at top of page) or my remix (at bottom of page)... I don't think mine really "rocks"... well I guess it kinda does... ok, so we'd have to further define our terms here... but thanks.

theron: thanks for posting even after your orig. comments got wiped out, that always drives me nuts. The times you mention are a little off, I don't think there are any vocals at 3:50 or 4:10. However, your comments make sense at 2:50 and 3:10ish. Thanks for the comments, that's the first time I noticed how quiet the vocal at 2:50 is... I always knew that was a loud synth on that verse, but I guess I never got the balance right...

CJ: thanks for the listen and the positive comments!

charger, I listened to the original and your Ether Remix, and I like your remix better. I liked the sort of gong keyboard effect that came in around 3:40. At first, when the vocal began to fade around 2:49, I wondered what was going on, then another vocal track emerged and the effect was cool.
I thought the rhythm track was slightly too far back and could have used a touch more high end.
A very creative remix, props to you!

Mark

ahh

Aliright charger

I have been listening to your songs. I am still listening to Complete remix now. I really like this, the sounds are excellent! Almost a cross between Noal gallaghers Chemical brother mix and smashing punkins vocal. Your using fruity loops for this, this has inspired me to go off and try it out properly. The piano parts really get me at 2 minutes and then perfect before 3 minutes. i would have loved to have heard more of that. Brilliant. Cheers

been listeing too Solace. Ace vocasl and that primal scream blew me away......

you certainly took the song in a new direction...kinda like the LSD version.... I liked it. but admittedly, I like the heavy guitar versions too....being a guitar myself;)

charger,

Cool.:D I like your version a lot more than the original. It's sort of trip-hop with shades of some of the Filter "Take My Picture" remixes.

I especially like the guitar feedback type sounds around 2:30. Are those from the original? The arrangement is excellent, but those FL synth sounds leave me wanting - as do the vast majority of soft synths regardless of brand.

I think your choice of setting the vocals back a little is right for this type of remix. But I would make them a bit wetter with effects - partly from an arrangement perspective and partly because I don't really like the singing style much. However, the line "..the blood is still on my hands" starting a 1:26 sounds really good and fits perfectly into the mix. It would be cool if more of the vocals worked as well as that, and I think the effects might help.

Also the Granulizer effect on the vocals is not so good. I can hear what you're going for and I really like the idea, but that specific effect doesn't seem to pull it off very well.

Nice work!

Just wanted to chime in and say how awesome we think Charger's remix is. From both a recording and a sheerly imaginative standpoint, it's pretty amazing. Our fans (who obviously prefer a little heavier stuff) have been outspoken about how much they like the remix.

Anyway, no recording or mixing advice for this. Just wanted to say that we agree with everyone else on this thread -- Charger kicked some ass on this! :D

badgas - thanks, man!

mkg - thanks for the comments. As for liking it better or worse than the original, I just think it's really different. Of course I like my remix, but if I hadn't been inspired by the original I wouldn't have been able to pull it off.

Erland - thanks a lot! Thanks for the comments on the piano, I'm not a great piano player, but I can definitely edit and make myself sound better. That was a free piano soundfont I found, and I used the fruity soundfont player and the piano roll to lay the part out, then I bounced the loop down so I could use it backwards (the first time).

mixmkr - LSD version, thanks! The more sober I am, the easier it is to remember how things sound when "altered."

barefoot - I've always liked what Filter does, but I must admit I don't listen to many remixes. Nothing but the vocals were from the original. The "guitar feedback" sounds are a patch I made in Reaktor. I thought about doing actual guitar, but the original was so guitar-heavy that I demurred. I like the fruity synths... they're quick and easy to sketch things out with... but I understand how people can not like them. I went with dry vocals because I was already "granulizing" a few lines, and because I dug the starkness against all th phasey, comb-filtered, distorted stuff I already had going on.

I really dug the Granulizer effect. I started out using it just cuz it sounded cool to stretch J's vocal out to twice its length. You might notice that later I used it to sort of "fragment" some lines and make random samples jump out. This was to go along with the theme of the song "completeness" or lack thereof, I thought it was pretty cool to have guy singing about how he could be made complete, and have his words be actually physically deconstructed a little, "incomplete." Anyway, thanks for the listen and the constructive criticism. I knew you would probably check this out since we've got our little side Acid/Fruity debate going on.

maryslittlesecret (J) - Thanks for giving me the opportunity! I'm glad you dig it, and I'm stoked that other people dig it too... I had a lot of fun doing it. Keep writing good songs, maybe we can do another remix down the road!

Nice use of instruments.

Was there some kind of skip at 1:55? Not sure...

All kinds of interesting things going on throughout. Nice job.
