Comparison of two mixes (Punk Rock)

The vocals on Demo 1 sound dramatically better (unless I've got the two mixed up). Demo 2 sounds like you got some kind of upper midrange boost that makes the vocals sound like nails on chalkboard. Really grating. Or it could be clipping on the master bus, I don't know. They were both too loud. Are those your vocals?

I don't mind the distorted vocal effect at all. I do think the drum kit and the track overall is seriously lacking any kind of weight in the bottom end. I don't know how this was recorded, so I don't have any idea of what options you have to fix it. It doesn't sound like punk either, unless calling it "Punk" is some excuse for not turning in a decent performance or a decent recording of that performance.

Ok, I'm done with labels, its not punk. I'm tired arguing labels on this forum.

The second version was going through a tube compression effect, it did sound a bit grittier but I liked it, however it seems #1 is a cleaner and better sounding mix according to most people I showed it to. I'll probably take off the compressor.

Punx: Telling other punx they're not punx since 1975.

Punk to me is an attitude, and the attitude is about making music thats not necessarily popular or mainstream, but what happens when the punk sound becomes mainstream?

Ok. But then you've got to allow Seapunk. :D
To continue bickering, I'd probably call it "garage" more than traditional punk.

As to the real point. I kind of prefer the second mix. It's a little messier, but it seems to have more bottom end.

Disco was an attitude as well. But I ain't doing either ;) But I have noticed lately I have been listening to a few tunes ...

Let's get a dictionary out and figure out if it's punk, that sounds like what sid vicious would do.

Great song, I prefer the first one, the vox in the second are a little tin canny to me.

I liked mix #1 better. The bass doesn't have as much click to it. And the guitars aren't as scratchy.

The guitars drown out the vocal. And just about everything else.

Liked the energy. I liked the vocal performance.

Drums have some small phase issues. A bit swirly. I'd take some reverb out of the snare, and give it a boost at about 5K. Then turn it up a db.

Bass sounds good.

Be the figurehead of a youth movement designed to sell clothing?
So... the punk thing to do is shoot up in the back during your breaks at Hot Topic?

1. i'd definitely call it punk-"ish".
2. i didn't mind the vocal effect in the 2nd one, i actually liked it (maybe use it for verses or just the bridge, as an idea) although it was much heavier in the higher freq's. sounds like a de-esser would help.
3. i'd go with the first one overall, but personally i'd integrate the vocal effect for portions of the track.
4. the drums were far back at times, particularly the fill at 2:00 on the first version...could hardly hear the tom fill

I didn't mean to offend. I was on a generalised rant. I'm just tired of "punk" being used as a synonym for lo-fi can't-be-assedness generally, when punk is principally a creative force, not the lowest common denominator of oikish uselessness that it's often used to describe.

Yours doesn't sound like that, although I stand by the specific mix comments - more drums, with beefier low end, please. :)

I think it's a punk type song. I'm not a music snob though. It doesn't sound like my favorite punk rock band. There are things that could tighten up the track a lot. It doesn't sound too bad to me, but I'm not a master recording engineer lol.

Is it just me, or is the kick on "metal Machine Blues" clipping really severely?

Yes Steve, metal machine blues is meant to be an industrial metal sound so the lo-fi-ish sound and clipping is intentional.
