.....and it's my experience that they're NOT. let's take the B1, which is a very neutral sounding mic. on the "darker" end of the spectrum you've got the MXL V67, and on the "hyped high end" side of the spectrum you've got something like a Rode NT1a or the SP C1.....and many flavorings inbetween.

all of these mics are in the sub-$200 realm, and not a one of them sounds similar--and given the ones i mentioned, they sound VERY different.

The C1 and B1 sound VERY similar, some say identical. Read some "pro" reviews and you'll find many share this opinion and because of this many seem to recommend the B-1 over the C-1 at $100 less. I own both mics.

This song was recorded with 1 Studio Projects B1 I did both vocals and guitar in one take into this one mic. I also DI the pre amp on the acoustic, and used that channel and turned it down low and panned it all the way to one side to enhance the stereo feel... Came out real well. I could not have picked up the same dynamics had I been useing a 57

So your B1 and C1 sound alike? I do own two B1's and I've had a C1 for a couple of days that sounded much brighter than the B1, mmmmm.....

I wrote some notes on the B1 at http://studioforums.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/694106689/m/6431051621

Also there is a comparison [ written 10-15-03 ] between the B1 and 57 - which might be of some use in this thread.

I think the Studio Projects B1 is now the most essential mic for home studios - even surpassing the SM57.

Here's my rating on studio applications, based on a scale of 1-10:

SM57
amps - 9
toms - 4
kick -2
snare - 9
OH - 3
acoustic - 3
percussion - 2
vocals - anywhere from 1-10

SP B1
amps - 9
toms - 10
kick - not tested
snare - 9
OH - 9
acoustic - 9
percussion - 8
vocals - anywhere from 5-8

I haven't seen anyone write that they sound similar. Where are you gettng that? The C1 is colored with hyped hi-mids and a brighter top. The B1 is more neutral with a flatter response. They're very different sounding mics. The C1 has never been a particularly good stringed-instrument mic. The B1 is easily the better all-around workhorse mic, but the C1 is a mic that can work great on vocals - especially pop and r&b. I do often recommend the B1 over the C1 if someone is looking for a mic to be used on a lot of different applications.
