I recorded the same song twice.
version 1

with this one i just plugged in an acoustic electric, and played while singing, all live, no editing or anything

version 2

with this one i recorded guitar to a click track then did vocals over that then harmonica

in the end both versions will have harmonica, and another verse, and probably changes in lyrics. these are just rough demos trying to find out which recording technique gets the sound and feel im looking for.
the sound im going for is very personal. it doesnt need to sound amazingly produced or anything. just very raw and real...

any opinions on which you prefer?

I like version 2 MUCH better. The vocals really punch through. Sounds like you have compression and maybe some slight reverb on it... much brighter than version 1.

my .02

certainly the second one.

what did you do differently besides over dub

The gain on the mic was up more on the second one, and the vocals are louder.

I didnt do much different. Maybe if I turned the vocals up on the 1st one, and the gain. I'd get the same results
I hate playing to a click track and I feel like I sing better if im playing guitar at the same time. but the sound does turn out better if i do things one at a time..hmmmm
One thing i dont like much about version 2 is that you can hear me breath and my lips and stuff..any suggestions on that?

Breath is not bad, I feel it adds a rawness to it...you could always remove the breath sounds with a de-breather plug-in you wanted...

try a "touch" of reverb an/or delay on the vocals as well, you might really like it.

thats true.
delay i really like on vocals but ive yet to find one of my songs that it fits just right. i like this one with delay, or reverb...
but, for example, i really like lennons vocals on Instant Karma! . but im not sure it fits my style of music.
