Has anyone had the opportunity to compare the reverb quality of both TC Electronic reverb units, the M-One-XL and M300 against the Sir reverb plugin?
I am currently using Sir but am considering the M-One-XL. I know the Rumour is supposed to be a great unit but it out of my price range. How does the M-One-XL stack up to the Rumour for those in the know?

thanks
Bob

I can compare the M-One XL to the Rumour, as I have heard both those units. They are actually both quite good, but I'd give the edge to the Rumour by far. The reason being that it has a *tons* more reverb algorithms, there are just a lot of different reverbs in there. The M-One XL has a good sound, but all the reverbs sound the same. The boxes are the two best in the budget reverb category, but the Rumour outclasses the M-One XL in my opinion. Between the two I'd get the Rumour hands down.

Sonic,

Would you say that the M-One-XL has the same level of quality as the Rumour but just alot less in terms of options and diversity? I don't care if the thing has a zillion selections, a limited set of quality ones would be fine for my needs.

thanks,
Bob

The Rumour has more selection of quality reverbs. The plate reverbs in particular are very nice, but they all sound good. I didn't hear a bad sound coming out of the Rumour.

The M-One XL didn't sound as good to me. It's good, but the quality on the Rumour is pretty amazing considering its price. I have some fx boxes in my studio, the TC M3000, Lexicon PCM-91 and 81, among others. I felt like the Rumour was playing more in their league than with the other $500 boxes. As a matter of fact, I liked the Rumour/Mangler so much I bought a KSP-8! I A/B'ed the Rumour to identical presets in the KSP-8 and they sound virtually identical. No cut down in quality.

So for the small difference in price I personally think it's worth spending the extra for the Rumour. Just my opinion, but that's what I did.

IU agree with Sonic Albert. The TC M1 reverbs are pretty good, and even the M300 ones are. The TC starts to sound better if you manipulate the parameters a bit. Many of the reverbs on the TC's do sound very similar, that kind of stock TC sound. The Rumour in my opinion has a deeper feel to it, a little more lush, and a lot fo the presets are much more usable without any real tweaking.

Convolutions however are a really really cool thing. I absolutely love my Waves IR verb, provided you feed it with the right convolution samples that is. I own an Eventide Eclipse and a while ago downloaded some large Eventide Eclipse samples. To my ears I really could not tell the difference. The slight difference that was there was probably more due to maybe some tiny AD/DA loss, but more likely due to the fact that the Eventide was running through a D&R console which sweetens things up right form the get go. Those differences were still pretty minor though. When you factor in SIR being free and you can use it on more than one stereo send, that makes convolutions pretty valuable. Not only that, but I would imagine there are going to be more preamp settings, odd FX etc.... available for convolutions in the near future as the technology catches on more, becomes more competitive, and the technology matures.

For me the real question would be how do you track an mix? If you are mixing in the box, an outboard reverb can be a bit of a pain to integrate smoothly. However, if you want to be able to use it live, or you are already used to stemming things out of your mixes and back in, or mix through a console, the Rumour would be a beautiful piece to have.

I'm with the sonic one! I tried a bunch and finally settled on the Rumour. There are other effects as well as the great reverbs that you will use even though you haven't. What are you using for converters? The Rumours converters work very well, a real plus for this unit!

Yeah, the ADA on the Rumor is supposed to be a BIG plus. That and the great verbs are why it's my next purchase.
