Even more redundant - vacation without wife and kids...:)

I've got four kids, including three-year old twins. I joke at work that I get 50 paid weeks a vacation a year.

AMEN!!!
I only have a 3 year old, but she thinks she's 15.....
Quite a handful... work is definitely quieter than the house.... which is always full of people I don't know when I don't want it to be. And I get to be the asshole who throws them out, and then I get no love for a couple days.....

Where did you find the deal on the Kingston 512 CF?

seems as appropriate as inappropriate a place to mention: Got my Kingston 512 for $15 after rebate.

Even though it took nearly three months for the rebate to arrive...

Sweet deal nonetheless...

This sounds great .... can you tell me where you found this deal? I just bought an MR8 off of eBay, and know I will need to get a bigger card right away.

Thanks,

hmmm, think it was buy.com...

Here is a similar deal

Look around there, the rebates come and go, and that was how I got mine for pretty dirt cheap. I'm thinking about getting the 1gb next....

Is the Kingston 1GB on Fostex's "approved" list?

Has anyone tried the 1GB Kingston on the MR8 to know for sure if it works?

There is a big ol' thread about CF cards on this forum, I'll bet if you dig through that, you'll find something concerning the Kingston 1gb CF.

Are you doing it all on the MR8? If you are bouncing to computer, chances are the only problem you might encounter would be the inability to bounce tracks 1-4 to 5/6 (and/or tracks 1-6 to 7/8), which if you are using a computer would not be much of an issue, if any at all.

Dig around buy.com, I'm sure you could find a Kingston 512 CF, which I use and it works just fine, or get the 1gb and be our guinea pig!!! :D

Best of luck and let us know which you decide on.

I'm looking for a 2GB card, I heard they were out there. But the 512 I bought cost me $99.00....

Being the Guinea pig ...

OK, I'll bite ... I just can't pass up that deal (1GB for around $50, after rebate)! Found a couple messages on that previous thread that seemed to indicate that the Kingston 1GB card worked fine, including bouncing tracks (which I doubt I'll do much of, anyway). So I've ordered the Kingston 1GB ... it should arrive about the same time as my MR8 (which I just got off of eBay for $180) . Looking forward to trying this unit out!

Just FYI, I think there are more than one Kingston 1gb CF. Not that both of them DON"T work, but just something you should be prepared for.

I think with the MR8, and the everchanging production of CF cards, you always have to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst out of CF cards.

Yeah, I'm beginning to understand that. Thanks for the heads up ... I'll let everyone know what my experience is.

Kingston 1GB CF card ...

... seems to work great!

Got my MR-8 in the mail yesterday (which I got off of eBay), and also the Kingston 1GB CF card (that I got from buy.com). First thing I did was to install the firmware upgrade v 1.2 (would never have figured out how to do that without this forum - thanks!), inserted the new card, and formatted it. It now comes up as a Hitachi .XX.V.3 card (?). I recorded on tracks 1 & 2, bounced them to tracks 5&6, then bounced them to tracks 7&8 so I could do a stereo wav conversion and upload it to my PC ... everything works flawlessly.

I recorded using just the internal (built-in) mic with an acoustic guitar and a mountain dulcimer, and was pretty impressed with the sound. Can't wait to try it out with some "good" mics! (Didn't realize that the XLR inputs don't have phantom power, so now I'll either have to drag out my mixer board to supply power, or get some good quality dynamic mics instead).

Anyway, so far, I love this little red box. And the Kingston 1GB card works fine (with v 1.2 firmware).

Thanks to everyone for all your help!

Cheers,

Glad you are happy with it. Now where do I get a 2GB card......

CF card for MR8

I just purchased the Ritek Ridata Super Fast 512MB 52X Read 40X Write Compact Flash card at www.meritline.com the price was only $57.00, shipping was $5.66, Total $62.66 they shipped it UPS took only 4 days.
When you put it into the MR8 it says Samsung CF/ADA which was strange, but ti worked perfect in normal and extended mode, and you could bounce tracks and everything perfectly. This card is on the approved list of Fostex.
So if you want a lot of room at a cheap price, this is the best I've found so far, so Happy recording all. The blunote man

yea, the name on the sticker of the card doens't usually mean squat. That's why it's hard to definitively say which cards will work.

I'm just waiting on another sweet rebate offer to come up on buy.com...
1gb baby...YEAH!!! Dare I dream of 2gb?
