If money is no object, and time is not of any concern I would suggest a nice trial period with different ones. Alot the the compressors listed are great units, but each one has a specific charateristics unique to that unit that make one better than another in specific situations. There are tube compressors, and solid state compressors, there are ones where they have limiters and eq with them. I think you should audition a few or even rent them to see what works for your application. But if money really isn't an issue, then buy a few types to cover more than one situation. Compessors, preamps and microphones all come in different colors and shades of those colors. Don't waste you money by making blind catelog purchases. Professionals already know this.

SoMm

Much thnx all of you!

They're all good.......

Only if you record them that way in the first place.......!

It's not the gear that gives you the sound, it's the recording technique - mic and mic pre selection, placement, the room acoustics...... etc......

I think it's great that you're going to have good gear to start off with, but sounds like your skills aren't up to the calibre of gear that you'll have!

Better brush-up on the basics.........

I'd say that depends more on the drums, how they're set-up, who's playing them, what room they're in, how their mic'ed, what mic's you use, what preamps you use and what A/D converters you use. You might not need a compressor at all to get good, punchy warm drums.

As to whether any of those compressors will enhance your drum sounds, it all depends on what the drums sound like.

jus wonderin

i'm not hating on you, but if you have a big 32/8 board and all these synths and shit

why would you be asking about what the best compressor is?

if money is no object then buy 2 or 3 high end ones from manley, universal audio, etc

that way you can have different sounds

check out www.sweetwater.com

or better yet... go to your local independent pro audio dealer. that way, you can probably make arrangements to A-B two or three different units back in your own studio, plus the dealer can give you a quick hands-on lesson in how to use the particular units you are auditioning.

much better than ordering blind from sweetwater.

Sweet&Sourwater charges wayyy to much for gear that you can purchase at a regular shop like Sam Ash, musiciansfriend etc at less than 15-20% from their list!

Sweet&Sourwater charges wayyy to much for gear [/quote}tru

seems like everthing they sell is at retail price

however they have most of the high end outboard shit...and remember "money is nooo object" to this emuxt guy

Roughly $3k5

You know, you only saved one character by saying $3k5 instead of saying $3500, while adding a slight amount of confusion. Sorry, it's the technical writer in me coming out.

HOT DAMN!!!!

I'm hiring you as my equipment buyer. Can you start tomorrow?

Hey littledog, thanks for adding to my list! :)

pipelineaudio actually threw in a unit that I didn't think of until he mentioned it, and indeed, a very powerful unit at that! It is as he advertised!!!

Yeah, that is a good deal for those units if indeed they are all in great working condition!

sweetnubs proclaims the best compresser to be an excellent musician with good technique.

Well, Emu, it's tough, I understand. You go off and try to do something right, and people get all bent out of shape. Some of them are envious because they know how to use the units you now own, but can't afford them. Some people just believe that the inexperienced should not get to play with high end gear until they've cut their teeth on more affordable tools. Don't let it get to you. You can learn the basics of tracking just as well with an Avalon as you can with an Audiobuddy!
I think there are a couple of valid points that may be lost here in all the pissing and moaning. One is that until you learn a whole bunch of skills, you can take that high end gear and record pure garbage. It's true, expensive gear will not make you an engineer.
The second point is that if someone like, say, Bluebear was going to shell out $2000+ for a compressor, he'd think long and hard before he plunked down the cash, and even with his considerable knowledge base and experience, he might be doing some research in the dead of night to find the best unit to fill weaknesses in his signal chain options.
I'm with you, Emu. I've spent lots of money on high end gear that I barely know how to use, but I am getting better. Here's my best advice.- Take a very small percentage of that money, and use half of it to buy a bunch of books on recording. Read them.
Then take the other half, find a poor but competent tracking engineer, and pay him for just a couple of days to help you set up your studio and make suggestions on level setting, signal chains, and mic selection and placement. Then go and record a few people for free, just for the practice. When you've built up a bunch of questions, get that engineer to come down for a couple more working days and show you more. After doing it yourself for a while, you'll learn more by watching the nice engineer.
Finally, remember that there are some damn good engineers on this board who would give their left nut to own that Avalon, and other similar gear, and it's hard for them not to get a little hostile when they see gear that could solve some of their biggest problems in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it-yet. Recording gear can be toys, or it can be- tools. There are many workmen here who see a kid playing with a good set of vernier calipers, and they want to take it away from him before he breaks it and say,"Emu, that's not a toy." Be sensitive to these people, because some of them *are* the nice engineers who can tell you how to use all of that expensive stuff.
Also remember that most of the people here who have some real good setups have sacrificed and sweated to get it, and always had to use gear that isn't ideal, making compromises for the best sound they can get. It's like they made it to the top of Mt. Everest, and just as they reached the summit, you got out of your helicopter and asked, "Whar's the best rope money can buy? I just know I can be a mountain climber." Don't let it get to you. If you learn the trade you've chosen, they'll help you more than you'd expect right now. One thing you won't get this way, though, is the exhilaration of the day you put your old cheap gear away and look at your new Avalon, Neumann, Manley, Brauner, etc. gear and know that for what *you* want to do, there's no better piece of gear, and you actually made the sacrifices to get it.
And, if you find recording's not for you, call Littledog and Trackrat, and they'll make you an offer-LOL. Best of luck with your new gear.-Richie

Littledog just got back from the Bahamas and won't be buying much of anything for a while as he's now flat broke...

Damn, and I was gonna let you have that Avalon for $100! But, you're broke-LOL-Richie

i actually just now read most of this thread. this is the kind of shit nubs was talking about when he posted his original and much loved thread, "the way it is." dude. no dude. dude. no dude! what in the hell are you doing? these are the people that piss me off, not hobby home recordists. dumbasses like these open a studio and fuck over musicians because they don't know what in the hell they are doing and they take legitimate business away from real engineers. i think they get bedazzled by all the pretty lights and like to impress chicks with their studios that they don't know how to operate. i did a consulting job a few days ago and some dumb hip hop jackass that probably made a bundle off a huge crack deal, since he obviously wasn't intelligent enough to hold down a job that would allow him to make enough money to purchase the equipment otherwise. the idiot had a full blown hd2 protools rig with the control surface and a mac g4. so i go over to consult and the first thing the idiot asks me is "so how can i get sound into this" hah hah hah hah. he'd spent weeks trying to figure out how to record something. hey emu, get the Distressor. if you can get you parents to buy me one, i'll come over and show you how to use it.

I was gonna be my modest self and say I really like my ART Levelar after the tube gets warmed up good. But mine don`t fit in this ballpark. I traded an old sm57 with some complexion issues for mine :)

Gosh that felt good..
