what is a common setting for the threshold when mastering? i know it depends on the song but i was just wondering. is -23 for the threshold too extreme to use?

But what?

Ok ok, If you're looking for someone to tell you it's alright to set you're threshold at -23, OK; it's alright to set your threshold wherever you want to set it. If it sounds right to you when it's set that way, then knock your socks off.

Is it common? There is no "common". It depends upon the song, like you said.

Is it sometimes done? If you're talking abot a standard wideband compressor (which is only my assumption since you never even mentioned what kind of threshold on what kind of device you're talking about), then yes, it is not unusual to use a low threshold like that followed by a very small compression ratio of something below 1.5:1, with the idea of just tightening up the overall mix just a bit.

Had a project late last week - All metal, all generally similar sounding mixes.

One track had a threshold around -40 at 1.1:1, the next was probably -10 at 4:1.

You do what the mix asks.

I note that a lot of people ask about compression, and even multiband compression thinking as a "fix" rule in mastering, and "the way" to get "punch" and a better sound ...I download some "before/after" Massive Mastering´s mp3, and I could see that in most cases the compression is not the "boss" ;what i heard were subtle mods and a goob job to get a better stereo image.
