It's a little more complicated than that... if your monitor is a 15" or even a 17" you might find fonts and fine details at 1600 X 1200 pixels to be unusably small, especially if you are over 40 like me :)

Even with a 19" monitor like i have this is the case -- even at 1280 X 1024 everything's too small for easy viewing for an old fart like me.

Yes that's a downside. But one can put the resolution up when tracking - it's not like there is anything that is gonna be small that you need to see.

True enough. It's easy to toggle resolution on these Windows boxes these days anyway...

(There... we can talk nice to each other once in a while!)

Alright- Thanks folks for all the suggestions and advice.

To finalize- Is there anyone out there that has a REAL problem with the components I've chosen? I know some of you would choose a faster, newer processor, and maybe a newer mobo. Anyway, speak now, or forever hold your peace. If there is anything else that anyone wants to comment on, please do so before I make my purchase.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Wood - I think you may in fact be a bit to serious about a "sound-free" computer.

I have a computer that has absolutely no parts designed to be noise free, and I can take a vocal mic and full volume and full boost and put it 4 feet away from the fans on the power supply pointing right at it - with no noise reduction and hear next to nothing at all.

I think you may be thinking computers are some sort of noise-beast when they are not.

And thus I think your choice on processor based on being quiet is a big issue. You should go with a MUCh faster processor - I promise you that you will run into problems with it much sooner than you deserve to......

.......also, just to let you know I've never heard of any single part of a computer ever making noise except the fans and the HDD when it spins (and the CD rom when it's spinning).

Ram and processors wouldn't make noise if you stepped on their nuts - so if someone told you there is such thing as a quiet processors that's unecessary!!!

Audio- point well made.

What type of mics are you using? I will be using a large diaphragm condenser, and I know they are famous for picking up room noise.

But I do agree with your comment about noise vs. processor speed. No one led me to believe that processors or ram make noise, but I do know the faster the processor the more heat, which means more fan(s) speed, and therefore more noise.

However, the computer I am running now is a P2 400mhz and is loud enough to be heard through the mic in a small room. However, we will be recording in a much larger room with room to spread out and move the mic away from the computer.

But you did get me thinking, and I am gonna explore a faster processor option.

Thanks again,

Jeff
