anyone have experience with the Vintech 1272 Neve Dual preamp?

Actually, I emailed them yesterday to ask him how much it would cost to order one modified, to have the 3rd gain stage, essentially making it a 1073 preamp, which is a very good thing.
Appears to be quite a great buy, and lotsa people like them alot and compare them favorably with thier Averills.
I'd say you cant go wrong.

keep me informed.

actually i'm thinking of buying these so i can benchmark a channel one that i'm gong to build. i've ordered the transformers and the circuitry is not that complicated. if i can build one, then i'm going to build eight channels. each channel will run me about $90 in parts.

thanks...

I doubt you can get the real St. Ives (?) transformers for under $60, but maybe I'm wrong. Vintech actually distributes those transformers now, and they were original Neve issue and a big part of the sound. They distort in the low mids, which gives it part of that "thing" that everyone loves.
The only thing with building them is having the test equipment to make sure they are properly calibrated and are not oscilating at any wacked out frequency, and they wont calibrate themselves, if I understand correctly. They also have to spec from like 5hz to 40khz to pass the test.
I'll let you know. I think Ammeth has the Vintech, ask him about it too.

i bought the transformers from Sowter.

i have all of the test equipment. i'm a EE and i've built circuits for over 25 years. my main concern is the circuit layout. this can be of major importance as some circuits have inadvertent feedback loops (or wire/trace coupling) that makes differences and power supply design is very important. i want to be able to benchmark against a known sound.

there's not a lot to calibrating a Class a Circuit. Class A is generally easier than A/B.

WEll, if it works out and sound nice, then let us all know how much you are gonna sell them for :) I say $500 for 2 channels!

I have recorded with the Vintech 1272 -- it's a real smoking mic preamp...makes a lot of things sound downright crummy by comparison. A friend of mine loaned me his 1272 and said, "Here... try THIS out for size!" Let's just say that the ART units sound really bad now? When I first heard the difference it was like being under a dark rain cloud and then coming out into the sun seeing a rainbow up in the sky...Vintech= great microphone preamps IMHO. I know several people that swear by them.:)
