Collaboration Wanted

I am a guitar player and my wife sings. We do a variety of music including blues, rock, and gospel/religious. While I can also play bass, drums, and some keys, I am mostly an electric guitar player. Examples of songs currently in the works include:

A. Still Got the Blues
B. Mary Did You Know
C. Fever
D. I Can Only Imagine
E. When Sunny Gets Blue
F. Miracles

We currently record music using a Fostex MR8. Today I use PC based system to generate bass, keys, and drums. I then add guitar and vocals to that and mix the result. For some selections I manually add bass.

While this works, it does not produce the best overall result. What I would like to do is to find 2 or more individuals who might be willing to collaborate and provide their instruments over the web. We would each individually record our own parts, and then combine the results during the mix process. While I would like to do a few instrumental songs, most would be vocal based. Finding a male vocalist would also be a plus.

This is not a $ oriented effort, but just for personal achievement. We plan to sell nothing and pay nothing as part of this effort. In the past we have given finished CDs to family and friends. We also perform at local churches where we use the same recorded material. There I prepare tracks with all but guitar and vocals missing. We then play the CD, and play/sing with it.

What I am looking for is the following:

1. Keyboard player
2. Bass player
3. Drummer or drum sequencer
4. Second vocalist

I have PCs here, mixing software, lots of tools, and a high speed DSL connection. I can easily set up an FTP connection to use for interchanging WAV files for each track. It would be good if the others also had an MR8, but that is not required.

I use PowerTracks Pro from PG Music for mixing and Wave Manager from Fostex to move WAV files to/from PC. I have played guitar for about 30 years. I have a PRS Custom 24, and an assortment of rack effects.

The sequence I have used in the past for recording is along the following lines:

1. Build basic song on PC using Band In the Box
2. Set tempo, and chord sequence on a measure by measure basis
3. Generate bass, drums, and keys tracks using Band In the Box
4. Transfer result to a single track on MR8
5. Record vocals and guitar on MR8
6. Send result back to PC
7. Mix result

There may be many iterations of steps 4-6, but that the basic approach used today.

What I envision for a collaboration effort is something similar. I’m open to suggestions as to the best way to do this.

hey

i play bass, piano, and can sing some harmony and lead too, id love the oppertunity to contribute some part in such a project. i can send some sort of an audition file if required. I dont claim to be the best in any of these catigories, but i do play in two working bands, a country band, and a classic rock band, we play just about every weekend for the few years so i do have experience. Some of the guys are ready for a break so i am really diving ino all the recording i can until the summer festivals start, and we start working more again

Thanks Dave

We also play in a local music group as well. More info, although out of date, is located here:

http://www.musicbyfreefall.com

We play a few times a month in local clubs, weddings, private parties, etc. Mostly classic rock and R&B.

I'm the guy with white hair. You can probably pick out my better half...

My wife and I also have our own web site for church work located here:

http://www.vocalministry.com/

There are some rough recorded clips there.

I am a keyboard player and vocalist. I am new to Home Recording though as you all can see, but have been a musician for a number of years and am very good at sequncers and keyboard programing on stand alone not PC based Workstations.

Take a look at my website:

Hey! still getting used to this web stuff. I signed up at "No where Radio" so I could show you my stuff. It's a little long, probably best to download to mp3.

The song is actually called "Monotonous Groove In A-Minor" I put "Our Town" by mistake.

All done on X-3 Workstation. Will get out my MR-8 stuff soon.

ben

now you see, thats why i am a piano player, and you are a keyboard player, sounds great , all those buttons and knobs, how do you guys do it? hahhhaha

It sounds like we have a few interested parties for collaboration:

1. dave in toledo for Bass
2. bsr2002 for Keys
3. kdgospel for Vocals
4. Ed for guitar

One remaining issue is drums. In the past I have used PC based drums, which are just fair. I also have an Alesis HR-16, which could be driven by the same PC MIDI file. That might sound better. However finding someone who can do something better would really be good.

The other question is the mechanics of the process. I suggest FTP as the way to interchange WAV files. I can set up a special FTP directory that each can read/write to.

If this sounds ok, the next step might be a simple test. Pick a somewhat simple song and see what happens.

Sorry guys, I've heard of this term before but don't know what it is "FTP File"

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. It's a standard way of sending/receiving data files over the Internet.

Click on link below for a simple example of an FTP site:

ftp://ftp.mtnsys.com

Simple tools like WS_FTP32 can be used to send/receive files.

ftp

should work fine, just need do download fetch or some other ftp protocol software, i think its free. I have some access to high speed transfers at work(computer graphics), will help me since i have dial up at home.

drums

as far as drums go, im using my keyboard, it has prerecorded beats and fills and all. pretty primitive to what you guys are used to im sure. Pick a tune and count me in sounds like a blast, make a test run....

If each would send me an E-Mail, I can provide all the details about FTP, location, tools, etc.
