Collaboration Wanted
I am a guitar player and my wife sings. We do a variety of music including blues, rock, and gospel/religious. While I can also play bass, drums, and some keys, I am mostly an electric guitar player. Examples of songs currently in the works include:
A. Still Got the Blues
B. Mary Did You Know
C. Fever
D. I Can Only Imagine
E. When Sunny Gets Blue
F. Miracles
We currently record music using a Fostex MR8. Today I use PC based system to generate bass, keys, and drums. I then add guitar and vocals to that and mix the result. For some selections I manually add bass.
While this works, it does not produce the best overall result. What I would like to do is to find 2 or more individuals who might be willing to collaborate and provide their instruments over the web. We would each individually record our own parts, and then combine the results during the mix process. While I would like to do a few instrumental songs, most would be vocal based. Finding a male vocalist would also be a plus.
This is not a $ oriented effort, but just for personal achievement. We plan to sell nothing and pay nothing as part of this effort. In the past we have given finished CDs to family and friends. We also perform at local churches where we use the same recorded material. There I prepare tracks with all but guitar and vocals missing. We then play the CD, and play/sing with it.
What I am looking for is the following:
1. Keyboard player
2. Bass player
3. Drummer or drum sequencer
4. Second vocalist
I have PCs here, mixing software, lots of tools, and a high speed DSL connection. I can easily set up an FTP connection to use for interchanging WAV files for each track. It would be good if the others also had an MR8, but that is not required.
I use PowerTracks Pro from PG Music for mixing and Wave Manager from Fostex to move WAV files to/from PC. I have played guitar for about 30 years. I have a PRS Custom 24, and an assortment of rack effects.
The sequence I have used in the past for recording is along the following lines:
1. Build basic song on PC using Band In the Box
2. Set tempo, and chord sequence on a measure by measure basis
3. Generate bass, drums, and keys tracks using Band In the Box
4. Transfer result to a single track on MR8
5. Record vocals and guitar on MR8
6. Send result back to PC
7. Mix result
There may be many iterations of steps 4-6, but that the basic approach used today.
What I envision for a collaboration effort is something similar. I’m open to suggestions as to the best way to do this.
