The ribbons I ended up using in the mix were modded (M.Joly) 205's and with shock mounts and everything, cost me around $325 apiece. I liked them much better than the Coles for that ap.

Id be interested in if a mod is the ticket to making an inexpensive ribbon sound like a coles...it should be possible.

then check out the link I gave in post #11. I chose the modded Apex's, and have time and again. One solo tpt artist I'm working with who has several albums out has chosen it as the best mic he's ever used. Period.

It's not an "exact" coles, but it is very similar, and to my ears, preferable much of the time. At least when a slightly more "open" sound is desired. They have a bit more on the top, and quite a bit more on the bottom compared to the 4038's.

If you check out that thread, leave your thoughts there. Cheers,

If you have only one mic to work with, try for a cardioid large diaphragm condenser right at the tail of the piano, just over the rim, with the top set at low or mid height. You'll be surprised at how much you capture with a single mic there - no hammer noise, no out of control live feedback issues.
