Hi!
So i'm new (if it won't be obvious in the next 5 seconds...) to the whole recording, manipulating sounds kinda thing, but i've been a musician for 15 yrs, mostly playing keys, writing and performing live (usually with friends)

I recently bought a Korg MS2000 and have been trying to understand a little about how it works and the infinite amount of tampering i can do with sounds. Maybe it was a stupid move to buy something so complicated when I knew absolutely NOTHING, but that's spontaneous me...

What I want to do now is get into some recording, mixing, be creative, etc with the ultimate goal of someday recording good quality music with my friends (guitars, drums, vocals).

What I have:
KORG MS2000
Yamaha DGX-500
New PowerBookG4 (1.5GHz, 512MB)
Logic Software
(I'm planning on purchasing a condenser mic as well, since I'll want to do vocals for sure)

So I'm not too sure what I need...
-Firewire Interface?
-with MIDI?
-how useful is MIDI if I don't have a special soundcard?

OMG so many questions but I'll just stick with this:

What do I need to get started?

Thanks so much for any help or suggestions.

As a keyboardist, you'll certainly want an interface with MIDI. There's no reason to not be able to take advantage of sequencing your keys.

As to whether you need a "special soundcard" at all, the answer is yes. If there's any ambiguity here, the interface will replace the functionality of your sound card for working on music - it will be all your ins and outs.

If I were you, I would read through the whole Tweakhedz guide:
http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm

It's a good introduction to most/all facets of the home recording process.

I don't work with a Mac, so saying anything about specific interfaces would be well beyond my scope of knowledge.

As to the Korg, I think (and my opinion seems to be backed up by quite a few people around here) its a great synth for learning synthesis - its got all those wonderful knobs :) Seriously, they'll help you to learn. I wish I had saved up for one, rather than settling for the MicroKorg - I'm spontaneous, too, and its all I could afford at the time ;)

If you're using Logic, you may also consider pumping up the RAM (if possible).
