do anyone know any advantages and disadvantages of close micing

advantages:
- it keeps out the sound of other instruments and to some extent a bad sounding room.

- if you find a sweet spot it can sound real nice

- on drums and such it gives you more control in the mix

disadvantages:
- you can miss out on some real cool room ambience

- you have to find the exact spot to mic it because up close the sound of an instrument or amp varies widely from one spot to another, some places sound like ass, whereas far away the sound blends together evenly (or something like that) and will sound very similar at equal distances

- on drums and such it can easily sound unnatural, and is often lots more work to get an equally good sound as you can get with well placed overheads

thanks a lot

Let's go at it like this.
-Mic choice -Directional, Omni, Fig.-of-eight; Directional has less room effect, but (typically) adds low-end lift placed close. Omni has less tone change due to distance change, but more room effect. Fig-8 has even more close-low-lift but picks up the room (back side) equally.

-Mic distance (and room effects); In addition to the close-low-lift effects, mic distance is often effecting the image', size', intimacy' -some of which also comes as 'room effect.

-Room effects; basically your wet/dry balance, as well a being the other half of controlling size, image, intimacy.
I'm sure I'm leaving a bunch of other things out here, but try to think of all of these as a mixture of continuously variable factors. ;)

sorry i'm new to this, i don't really get your answer all i'm looking for adv and dis for distant micing, accent micing and ambient micing, sorry for beging dumb

what are you trying to record? Voice is different than cab than choir than choo choo trains etc..........

'Source' is the instrument/voice/etc.
He was asking what (for this example) are you micing. And if the question is to get spacific you wouldl need to sort of say what you are trying to do.

If you would like, pull out the parts that don't make sense and we'll break them down. Basically what we're talking about is 'closer' gets you more isolation (less 'bleed') from things around the mic, but also changes the tone you get. A 'spot mic' would suggest that you have a mix of mics -say a distant mic (or stereo pair maybe) getting the 'whole picture' and a close' to 'spotlight' or feature something.

You can't just show up here and ask what the Disadvantages and Advantages of close-micing (notice how I typed the whole word?) and expect an easy answer. You need to realize that your question has been answered as generally as possible, but that each and every situation for recording needs to be assessed differently. There are different advantages and disadvantages for different places and situations - and without those specifics we can't give you any more info!

Try reading Harvey's mic thread...it's at the top (sticky) of this section of the forum... you'll learn a lot.

I'm not sure what you mean. I gave you the advantages and disadvantages of close micing. The opposite of that is distant micing, which is also known as ambient micing, so for those ones you can just switch the disadvantages and advantages around. Accent micing is a compromise between close micing and distant micing, so the advantage is that you can get the best of both worlds, while the disadvantage is that you can also lose the benefits of both.

If you need to write a whole report on this, you're gonna have to search the forum. Obviously we can't write it for you. Perhaps your thesis could be about how it all depends on the source, and base your arguments around that. If the instrument your recording is just a backing in a very dense mix, perhaps distant micing is the way to go. If you want it big and larger than life, perhaps close micing would be best. Out of the theory behind recording that I know, I've learned most by searching this site, so I would suggest doing the same. Good luck.

thats fine thanks and you have helped me corban, i have all the information now
