Bored of Canada
Im looking at buying some drum mics. I've already got Studio projects B1s for overheads and an SM57 for the snare. I'd like to get mics for 2 rack toms, 1 floor tom, and a bass drum. I'd like to keep the price under $400.
Since I'm just running through a mixer with no noise gates, etc. do you think the bleed in would make things sound crazy?

EDIT: I'm going with an Audix D6 on the kick
Am thinking Sennheiser e604's on the rack toms and floor tom. anything to say?

The Audix kick is the D6. Well, anything will work, but the D6 is the designed kick mic. The D4 is more floor tom, that seems no big deal, but it won't have that 80Hz thump that a D6 will have. Audix has a Fusion pack for maybe $300.

Oh thanks, well then the D6

No, gating drums isn't necessary. Don't worry about bleed. Worry more about phase issues if your close-mic placement isn't right.

These are great microphones on toms!

You should really consider the Sennheiser e602 for the kick drum.
I've gone through a bunch of different microphones and have found this to be at the top of my list for an inexpensive kick drum microphone.

Maybe that D6 will work well on the floor tom? I just wasn't that impressed with it though on the kick drum.

aahhhh yes, the e604s, very nice mics on toms. The EV N/D 408 and N/D 468 are nice too.

The e602 is fine for kick. I have a few mics that I pick from depending on the size of the kick and the music I am recording; I have an old Audio Technica AT25, an old Sennheiser MD421, even a Beta 52. It really depends. No one is asking, but it all matters; the size of the kick, the tone you are after, how you mic the drum, how you tune, if you are using a resonant head, etc. But any mic mentioned will work, and sound good. The rest is up to you.

Yeah, Im going for a punchy tone. There is a reso head, and it's a 22 in kick.
