What is the best way to get rid of clipping without rerecording?

(1) Pray.

(2) Try rolling off the low end - Clipping usually sounds like high-end, but the energy is often extremely low - Keep in mind that a clip is a square wave at whatever the frequency of the clips are - Usually no more than 30 or 40 per second unless it's pretty extreme. Rolling off at 50 or 60Hz can make it at least "less irritating" but it hardly makes it "pleasant."

Then, if you can sweep a parametric across the highs, sometimes you can "soften" the crackle a bit with a notch filter.

For the most part, these are just band-aids... Clipping isn't going to go away for the most part.

they also make plugins that help round off the square wave that is results in clipping. I know Pro Tools has one....but not sure if there are other ones out there. Of course, it won't work well with BIG clip problems...but, it can help if you just touched red for a second or two.

my clipping usually only hits with the lower freqs. I limit/compress when I record and this stops it. Bass, drums, and vox always are compressed on the way into the recorder. I generally don't on a distorted guitar, but a little on acoustic or undistorted. I hate hitting red. I ALWAYS re-record if anything clips. If you don't it will be too prominent in the mixdown. I don't add any digital effects except sometimes on vocs. I get the best sound I can without adding effects later. I mic everything and keep the actual recorded sound. It works for me.
