He understands your mixer better than I do.
Nah, I've never seen it before, actually. Frankly for the week that I've been watching this thread I've been waiting for someone to mention this probability, as with most powered mixers I've seen, "Main Out" is usually post-amplifier (hence the name "powered mixer" :) ). You knew that too, I'm sure, but - like we all accidentally do on many occasions - that one word "powered" was missed by most here, I think.

But to make sure, before I posted, I looked up the mixer and found this description at Zzounds:
Output connections
Versatile connections make it easy to add this powered mixer to any speaker setup. Industry-standard Speakon connectors on the back panel match up with any of the latest passive speaker enclosures on the market today. Additional 1/4-inch jacks on the front panel work well with any loudspeakers that haven't adopted the Speakon standard.
A look at the provided picture shows these 1/4" jacks labeled as "Main Out", with the standard RCA "Rec Out" jacks sitting right next door.

Yeah I think they've misstated that. I had a look at the manual a while back – they show ‘passive’ but with fed with an external amp. Both the front TS main' and rca are +21 lines.

Yeah, I just checked out the PDF spec sheet, and it says the same thing.

Unfortunately that leaves me back to the thought that either there is a miscalibration between the metering and the output levels of those main outs, or that that is simply a noisy output circuit.
