clipping amplitube

i have a problem with clipping in some vst recording such as sampletron and amplitube. i have setup the input gain correctly on my interface and likewise within amplitube (making sure clipping is not occuring) however on playback there is definitely some clipping there, not distortion. This problem i also found occurred on some midi vsts

any ideas

Hey Dave, I think you're running into processing power problems and not distortion or clipping. Does it sound like stutters and glitches in the play back?

Many computers aren't strong enough to run lots of hard core plugins like those, especially if it's an older machine. Mine has a lot of trouble as it's 5 years old. But there might be hope. It's called the audio buffer. Check out this article. The last bit probably won't be helpful, but the first chuck will. iZotope Support Portal

Also, can you give us a bit more info? What are the specs of your comp? (RAM and processor are probably sufficient). What DAW are you using? How many instances of the amp modeling plugs are you running at once? Have you mixed full projects with lots of plugins without running into this before?

An audio sample of the noise would also help ascertain if it is clipping or not.

If it's a buffer issue, it likely won't export the glitches. I doubt it's distortion because he's overdriving a guitar. Kinda tough to notice extra distortion on a distorted guitar I would think.
 
Well like you say, if it's glitches, you wont hear anything. That's one thing ruled out. You could see the wave form and see how hot it is running and also, he would hear the file himself and know if it sounds differently to what he hears in the DAW in an instant.

My point of a sample is that the sound in a DAW is not necessarily so in an mp3/wav
 
He didn't actually say that he was using Amplitube for overdrive. Maybe he's going for a clean amp sound? Doesn't much matter, though. The speaker simulator will chop off most frequencies above the 4-8K or so. Digital clipping afterwards will add artifacts at frequencies higher than that, and will definitely be noticeable.

Does Amplitube have an output setting which doesn't affect the behavior of the "amp"? Haven't even looked at that one in a while, but in PodFarm you have the amp's Volume control which supposedly changes the way the model sounds the same way the Master on a real amp would and then an output level which sets the actual level of the audio stream leaving the plugin.

"Not clipping" can still be too high. Your target should be to keep your peaks around -12dBFS.

I think it may just be down to a dodgy patch with amplitube, other presets work just fine. it is a clean amp sound that was showing signs of clipping. It could of just been the vst emulating the sound of a tube amp breaking up when cranked! (not very well...)

i figured out the problem with sampletron.... basically i had the vst volume way to high for that particular sound
 
That's possible. I've often found clean pre-sets to be louder than distorted pre-sets whenever I've fooled around with any kind of emulation. Might have something to do with the sort of built in compression that comes with distortion.
