clipping after applying effect?

I was under the impression that all of the effects settings for a project were stored in the session file, reinstalling CEP due to a crash will destroy your saved presets, but that shouldn't cause a session not to open with the correct effects parameters, right?

How else could a session file be opened on another computer where your effects presets were not present?

I don't think that saving a copy of your ini file with every project is required.

Yup, that's my view too.

So accepting that, the best method is to work in 32 bits using realtime effects. Mix down to 32 bits, then in edit view normalise the file before converting to 16 bits for burning. And/or, use the program's mixer to ensure that clipping does not occur (same as you would with a hardware system), use effect controls on individual tracks likewise (so in reverb for instance, lower the sliders for wet and for dry and for early reflections etc - look for overall gain controls in eq settings), and when it's about right, use hard limiting as the last effect in each track's chain of effects to catch anything unexpected.

Fair enough, and thank you for your patience. :)

However, I use plugins whose preset information *isn't* stored in Cool - it's stored in the plugin - so I'm still gonna have to make sure that's backed up, I think.

If I'm not mistaken, Cool stores the plugin information in the Cool session info, but it only works if the plugin's up and running, right? I'm talking about multitrack stuff here.

Yes, you might want to have this backed up if you don't want to have to recreate all of your plugin presets after some kind of hard drive failure, this would be the same as moving your stuff to a new machine, and doesn't need to be done for every CEP session file that you are backing up.

Yes, as long as the plugin is properly installed, CEP should be able to open up a session that contains the plugin, and the plugin's parameters should be remembered and correctly setup regardless of whether or not there are any stored presets.

Hey my handiest tool in CEP 2.0 is analyze/statistics. I check every wave file at every stage of production to make sure there is no clipping. I don't use any effects in Edit view except noise reduction/fades/amplitude(for DC offset)/generate silence/Trim.

I record at -3db mostly and shoot for my masters to be around -1.2db so that when I convert back to 16bit 44100 and dither I still have some headroom. Sometimes the dither kicks it up to -.5db but my recordings sound fine on several different players.

Overusing my leveler or over saturating the signal at the output stage will cause a lot of destortion.
