I learned the importance of using near-field monitors for mixing, instead of headphones, that there's some amazing talent out there, and that I was correct in thinking I don't know that much.

I've learnt that there is a hell of a lot to learn, and had I known that as a beginner, and known how much money I would end up spending, I have no doubt I would have given up straight away.

I have reached a conclusion, if you are not in the creative process of making music (mixing, recording, whatever), feedback is very limited. I have decided only to ask for feedback from those who understand and are active in the process.

For those who are not, they just get to determine, hey I like it, no I don't. I really have stopped soliciting feedback from them. Just hey here it is, they just become listeners. I've stopped asking for feedback from them.

True...and I think even for those people who are active in the process of recording....I would say 90% of them give feedback purely from a subjective ("I like it" or "I don't like it") mindset, and one that is directly connected to their own music tastes and recording experiences.
That's why you often get allmost conflicting opinons or quite a l lot of variety in opinions....that at the end of it, you just feel that going with your own perspective is no better or worse. :D

Granted, when there are more specific/technical questions...then there can be a specific right/wrong ways to do it, so the feedback is not as subjective...and also when something is so obvioulsy bad sounding, maybe...that it's clipping like mad or has way too much reverb or whatever...then most people will pick up on that and reply about the same.

Anyway....the biggest thing I've learned here and on other audio forums is that there's so much variety in what people consider good music, so anything goes...and one person's crappy mix may be another person's killer lo-fi production. :)

We crush dreams here.....

Whatever you do, don't ask Greg about Santa!

Why?? What's up with Santa?? I talk to him every year at the mall. He's a nice guy. Smells of rot-gut whiskey, but...

What does Greg know about Santa that I don't want to ask...?

Hmmm. well....
Let me put it this way : Have you ever seen them together?

I've learned a ton of stuff, way too numerous to mention. A lot of it, I would have learned on my own anyway, a lot of it I wouldn't have learned if it wasn't for this place.

But one thing I've learned is who's advice to take seriously and who's advice I just need to say "thank you" to. A few people always have to find SOMETHING negative to say about anything they comment on, and I'm not just talking about my stuff, there's a definite pattern to how some people post. I also find that, while some people have what I call "Text book" knowledge, their recordings betray any sense of applying that knowledge.

Then there are the people who put together some pretty good recordings I guess, but their music is so stuck in some weird, late 70's, forgettable, adult-orietnted, sap that i's hard to listen to more than 20 seconds of anything they post. This in turn makes it impossible to take any of their advice seriously.

Basically, what I'm saying is, Greg and maybe 3 other people are the only ones who's opinions I take seriously on anything. :D

I actually started this post on my way to making a point, but I can't remember what it was.

So I traded a point for a rant. Anyone got a problem with that?

:)

Thanks for saying that....that was my point, that often advice and opinions about recording quality and techniques, are directly linked to personal tastes in music...even though the latter is based on subjective opinion and taste.
There are a lot of different music styles on the forums, many are very well done....and yet, most of it is music that a lot of folks here may not actually want to listen to for more than 20 seconds, for pure entertainment. :D

AFA as when someone asks for or gives advice on recording techniques/questions...I don't really pay attention to the style of music it is that they do, unless the question about recording techniques is relative to the style of music. and IMO that has no direct connection to technical recording questions/opinions.

I find that the majority of stuff (good or bad) posted on HR is locked either into a specific time period or narrow-focused genre...or sometimes both. I've only heard a few things here in the last 2-3 years that would maybe fall into current music flavors....but still, that doesn't take anything away from any of the music people here do, IMHO...any style well done can be appreciated.

Well OK....I think we all hate Rap on HR.... ;)

Hey...anyone think that the title of this thread sould be changed to reflect the topic...."What have you learned on HR?".....?

Not me. I love good rap. Problem is, there hasn't been any good rap put out since about 1993. Like many styles of music, it just started repeating itself, and rap happened to do that very early into it's existence. I love Snoop Dog's "Doggystyle" album, and Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". I think they both came out in 1992 and nothing better has come out since.

The reason I don't bother commenting on most rap is because, let's face it, rap is karoake. It's someone talking over pre-recorded music now. I don't have any respect for that, and can't be moved by it one bit.

Yes...I was half-kidding about hating it.
There's been some good Rap/Hip Hop....but like you say, not lately!
Lately it's just about taking someones "beats" and then dropping some rap over them. There's no soul to that kind of production, and it's IMO, very non-believable.
I like when someone crafts a song from scratch, so that everything is meant to go together...regardless of style.
If it's done well...I can listen to old-style Country...or Funk...or Metal (there's another genre that's turned into programmable karaoke, IMHO).

I personally only ever give feedback on songs that are of genres I like and listen to because then I can much more easily compare it professional recordings. If there is a drum and bass song, all I could really say is "yeah that sounds good" or "I don't think that sounds good".

Yeah....that's normal, that we lean toward things that are already familiar to us.
I was just saying that it is possible to listen to any music, regardless of your style tastes...and you can still judge how well the overall recording was done...though I agree that sometimes the style maybe so unfamiliar, that it might be hard to judge it fairly.

I just find it odd when some people will out-of-hand, "hate" on some music just because it's a style they don't ever record themselves.
I like messing around with different flavors of music when the songs allow it.

Dammit, I always get a Thank You from you. :(

I also find that, while some people have what I call "Text book" knowledge, their recordings betray any sense of applying that knowledge.

Dammit again!!!

I'm probably 13 or 14 on that list. :(

I'm so paranoid. :laughings: :D

Hehe....Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you. :D
