Unless you have a 1930s something or other, your guitar will have a finish that is intended to be cleaned with ordinary damp cloths. I use Windex on my acoustic - spray some on a cotton cloth and scrub gently around the grime. Wipe off quickly and then do it again. A little wax will make it feel good, but is not necesary to preserve the finish.
The one thing you should avoid at all costs is any product containing silicone. That stuff is death to guitar finishes for two reasons: (1) it seeps in any crack or open edge, screwhole etc., and (2) silicone never dries. Well, in theory it might, but not in our lifetime. So you have a coating one molecule thick that prevents any subsequent repair from taking hold. Bad stuff.
