Does anyone know of a safe cleaner to use to clean the finish of my acoustic guitar? It has grime on it that will take a little more than just dry wiping. Thanks. -Perry

A good go over with Murphys Oil Soap (mixed with water) and a soft cloth should remove the grime and build up. Follow this with a good wipe off with a damp cloth, do this part several times to be sure you get all the soap off. thoroughly dry with another clean soft cloth. Follow up with a polish job ( I prefer Martin Guitar Polish but use whatever brand you like.) If you want to do the fingerboard while you are at it, put several drops of lemon oil on a cloth and coat the fingerboard (get it wet) let this sit for several minutes then wipe it off, repeat this step if nessassary untill there is no gunk and the fingerboard is clean. Wipe off any excess oil from the fingerboard. Lastly put on a new set of strings, tune up and enjoy.

I read somewhere about using ammonia to remove the old wax and grime build up.
I used it. It's kind of alarming at first, because it makes the wax all hazy. But, as you use a clean spot on the cloth each time, it removes all the wax buildup and grime. Then you'll need to apply a good guitar polish.

Unless you have a 1930s something or other, your guitar will have a finish that is intended to be cleaned with ordinary damp cloths. I use Windex on my acoustic - spray some on a cotton cloth and scrub gently around the grime. Wipe off quickly and then do it again. A little wax will make it feel good, but is not necesary to preserve the finish.

The one thing you should avoid at all costs is any product containing silicone. That stuff is death to guitar finishes for two reasons: (1) it seeps in any crack or open edge, screwhole etc., and (2) silicone never dries. Well, in theory it might, but not in our lifetime. So you have a coating one molecule thick that prevents any subsequent repair from taking hold. Bad stuff.

I gotta agree, silicone is a definate thing to avoid, as are most chemical solvents and petrolium products. Although most guitar finishes are pretty tough they will cloud and discolor when exposed to solvents (acetone, tolulene, naptha etc...)
