I have yet to see this question answered in full, though I have read some about it in the past. This is why I am interested in the opinions of people here, hopefully my question is worthy of response. I have access to a closet in my basement, and there is excellent isolation in there. My question simply is, should everything besides drums utilizing a microphone (guitars and vocals) be recorded in there? I have heard some say that everything should be, but I'm not entirely sure. What do you think?

Isolation from what? Do you live next to an airport? Your neighbors rebuild motorcycles?

Obviously, if outside noise is a huge problem, you have to record in the spot that minimize that. But if it is not a problem, why would you want to record ANYTHING in a little tiny room?

If you are recording drums at the same time, then that would be a good reason to put down a reference vocal in the closet. But it will sound better when it comes time to sing the keeper track if you move the vocalist to the biggest room you can find, not the smallest.

But you were talking about recording everything everything (except drums) in the closet, so either you are recording everything one instrument at a time, or you will have a really crowded closet!

So if that's the case, I would recommend recording NOTHING in the closet. Unless, of course, your house is right in the flight path for an airport...

Smaller spaces, *especially* those with good isolation (as they *trap* sound inside) are normally incredibly bad sounding places in the lows and lower midrange. Good "iso" booths for piccolo and triangle, but little else.

Great for keeping noisy gear though - Computers, tape machines, etc...

closet

lol, thanks. I guess that would be one crowded closet. Actually I am recording everything one at a time. (It's a power/pop sort of project along the lines of Matthew Sweet, Jason Falkner, Brendan Benson, New Pornographers and a bit of lo-fi White Stripes thrown in for good measure) That's interesting(about the vocals), I actually have a fairly big room, and am pretty isolated (no airports around here folks). I think maybe once in a blue moon i'll record in the closet if I am looking for a different sound, but from what I gather from the responses, it is not such a good idea to do it often. I have been recording in the room already, and it doesn't sound bad to me, I just figured I would pop the question. Thanks again everyone.
