Classical Guitar Demo

Yo folks. A friend of mine asked me to help him record a five song demo of some classical guitar pieces.

El Noi de La Mare

This was recorded with a pair of Neumann KM184s about six inches from the guitar in an X/Y pattern with one mic roughly pointing at the sound hole, and the other at the 12th fret. The mics went into a Mackie Onyx 1640 connected to a MacBook Pro running Logic Pro 7.

My buddy breathes pretty heavy when he plays... just his way of rockin' out, I suppose.

Not sure what type of feedback you are looking for...but for me, there is no passion in the playing.

It was hard for me to listen to the recording aspect of it, because of this..not trying to be mean..just stating how I perceived the piece.

Hope someone comes along, who can help you out better.
 
Sounded OK. I'd only have two comments. One is the reverb seems a bit "big" for a song like this.

The other thing is that there is some background noises. Some fret and extraneous neck noise, which is expected. But I caught a few times where it sounded like the player was shifting in their chair or something like that. To me something like that should be punched out.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't looking for any type of comments in particular, just whatever anyone felt like touching on.

The artist playing the track is definitely passionate about music. If one of my roles as a recording engineer is to convey that to the audience, then it sounds like I need to do some work in that department.

I originally had a much dryer mix, until suggested by some who have heard it to open the space up a bit. I suppose I'll shoot for the middle ground. Also, some compression could probably be utilized to keep the transients caused by fret noise from jumping out of the mix so much.

The player did move around a lot while performing, and those KM184s pick up just about all of it. I'd like to replace some of those sections, but only had the luxury of one or two takes for the tracks recorded. As this is for a final project in a commercial music class, we were given a limited time to complete the project and the player has a rather unconventional schedule.

Alright, enough with the excuses... :D

I'll continue revising and post an updated version when I can. Thanks again for listening.
