The wife and I sat down withthe bills last night and set our budge for Christmas this year. So I'm thinking about a couple ideas for my Christmas wish list...

The first is a new vocal mic ($500 to $750 range). Wouldn't mind if it also sounded great with acoustic guitar. I'm thinking maybe:

Shure KSM42
Rode K2
AT4050
or maybe something Tube...?

I currently have a Rode NT1, Rode NTK, MXL 990 and Shure KSM27. I have an old AKG414 on long term loan, but fear it may have to go home soon :(

This would be primarily for baritone range male vocals. Anything else I should consider?

The other option is for some better overhead mics. I use a pair of Audix F15s for some stuff and I'll combine the NT1 and NTK sometimes. The later combo was just for kicks and actually didn't turn out too bad.

I don't close mic toms, just a 5 mic setup (2 OH, Snare, Bass, HH). Would a pair of AKGs C1000s round out my options?

Lastly, I could throw in a bit of my own funds and replace the AKG414 when it get's recalled by it's actual owner.

This may be a can of worms, but I just haven't kept up with that many new developments in mics so I'm guessing I'll hear some new names on this one :)

Thanks!

Frankly, given the mics you have, I'd buy a 414.-Richie

Hey I just wrote my yearly Xmas gift guide http://www.mojopie.com/xmas04.html

For a baritone voice, I think I'd probably give a try to a Blue Dragonfly. It's got a nice yet complex high end that brings out a lot of male voices in the baritone range. I'd try one before buying though. Blue mics tend to either be genius with a source or not at all. The Dragonfly is also my fave on the acoustic guitar. Hmm, maybe it's the one for you...

out of the mics you listed i would go with the AT4050. The 414 would come in second. Guess it just depends on what your going to want to do.

Very Cool track. That guy actually sounds a bit like me... I agree, there does seem to be a touch of the "cloudiness" at times, but a very cool sound.

I'm liking the idea of a second KSM27 too.

I'm also now toying with some outboard gear too...

I'll probably putz around with this until it's too late and end up with socks! :D

Flip a coin and get the 414 or the 4050 and never look back. Both are great mics at this price point. Then start next Christmas list with a definite plan or goal for improving your studio. Whether that be more mics, compressor, eq, room treatment (usually overlooked, should be #1 priority), etc. Figure out what you want to do that you can't do now (or wantt to od better)

It looks like you've already got some decent vocal mics. I'd look at something else -- unless you just like to collect mics, which is perfectly understandable I guess.

get another ksm 27 for overheads and get yourself a ribbon mic. also get some cool vintage Electro Voice mics like RE11, RE15, RE16, RE18 and 635a. they can be used on lots of sources and have a very useable sound. they are fun to play with.
