Christmas guitar

I know this woman who doesn't have A lot of money and she has A twelve year old son who wants A guitar for Christmas.(electric). She has $200.00-$225.00 to spend. The thing is, I think this kid has some real potential. I don't know what would be A decent guitar (new) in that price range. I have never spent less than $450.00 myself.....I would like to help her out on her limited budget. Anyone have A suggestion?
 
How about a Fender Squire Strat. $150 at most large retailers.

how about something higher end but second hand on ebay. Just give the guitar a little guitar polish and it will look brand new (if the kid is concerned with aesthetics)
 
Epiphone is the way to go in my opinion. When I was young, people probally thought I had an epiphone endorsement. I've had tons of them! :D
 
yea, I've thought about used, or maybe A Squire. It would even be hard to find A decent used guitar on E-Bay for $200.00. I'm thinking about just selling her one of my mexican Strats and letting her make payments. i've got A few of them like new. Maybe let her have one for what I payed for it. Thank you guys for the input.
 
I just sold a nice mexican strat for 200 bucks. Crap, I would of sold it to her for that amount. I've got a pretty nice electra for sale on ebay right now. It's buy it now for 250. It's got rio grande pickups (humbucker in the neck). It's a yellow tele. Let me know if you might be interested.
 
how about an Agile? i hear wonderful things about these guitars all the time at Rondo music just do a google search and they should turn up... they have strats teles and LPs for under $200 and i understand that all of the people who have them love em. myself i would buy one of the cheaper strats they have or even the cheap Tele and then try and get him a good used amp like a VOX pathfinder :)
 
I am with Geezer on this one. A Squire Strat would be the ticket. You just can't go wrong. Kennyboy
 
I'm won't put down a squire. My first electric was a pretty sweet squire tele (I've loved teles ever since that day *tear*). But I think for the money you could get a better guitar.......

I'm not real sure about thoose Agile guitars, but if you're life depends on it, don't buy the kid one of thoose Essex p.o.s.'s I bought one several years back.

And I PROMISE that this is true..... one of the frets cut my hand when I went to pull it out of the box the very first time...

Now it wasn't the top of the fret that cut me..... it was the side (like where binding would be on a les paul neck)...... The guitar got played maybee like 10 times and then I sold it to a kid who smashed it at a show......

Incase you zoned out and didn't read that.... stay away from essex. Total crap....
 
Ibanez GAX50 or GAX70 starter pack, guitar, tuner, gig bag and practice amp, all for less than $200. It's a good deal on a decent guitar and those thin Ibanez necks are great for beginners. Both Washburn and Squire have some good deals on starter kits too, the Washburn X series (X10 rosewood fingerboard, X11 maple fingerboard) kits are good starters and generally run around the $200 range. Squire starter packs run just over $200. I saw a Lyon (made by washburn) at Target a few days ago for $99.

Try a crate strat pack. Those crates ar nice guitars for the money. My first guitar was that kind adn i still like to play it. Even though i have custom fender strat pick-ups on it, but the "stock" ones soudn realyl good, better than a squire in my opinion
 
Hey, thanks for all the replies. I now have A ton of available options to check into and I'm sure they are all good choices for the price range. I may not have been able to help with this Christmas gift had it not been for the input on this forum. Thanks!
 
I would definately go with a non usa strat. Try for mexican if you can get it.
 
The secret is to have a guy who can play pick the thing out. There are plenty of sub $200 guitars that rock, but there are more sub $500 guitars that suck. Go to a music retailer with a bunch of the same model and go down the line until you find the one that wasn't built on monday morning or friday afternoon.
 
Or...instead of a Squier Strat, she could get him a Squier '51. They're pretty much $149.00 all day long anywhere, then she could get him a little practice amp.

I have 2 of them, and I love 'em. Plus, they look better than a Squier Strat. ;)

twas the biggest piece of shite ive ever had the misfortune to own,,,,,

i suppose i was just unlucky perhaps,cos ive played a great Squire Tele :rolleyes:
