Choosing a Sound Card! Help Please !

Hi, this November/December I'm looking at buying a sound card (in Australia). Umm I've read articles on the Yamaha flashy DSP cards and one umm Soundscape Mixtreme.. there's also a package going (the cheapest - about 250$ US - I think).. for a band situation, being able to use for practicing, recording, cutting and pasting bits in and out of songs etc, what would be the best value for money sound card we could buy (probably 8 recording channels). Can anyone help?
