so far ive come up with the epiphone les paul standard

i dont really want a strat because i just dont think they look as nice lol so umm which of these would you recommend and are there any others in this price range that are any good?

thanks

I would say the Les Paul Standard would be much better than the Junior. EZ Willis has one of those Juniors and said the original pickup was hardly usable-he replaced it with a P90. He also said that the body was not wood at all, it was a powdery plastic or something-he found this when he routed it out for the P90 pickup. You might send him a PM to get more details.
Try the user reviews at Harmony Central, they might help you decide.

check out a carvin, as long as you stay away from the bells and whistles custom add ons you can get a custom built american made instrument for just a little more than the epi. I own a carvin TL-60 (tele style) I added every bell and whistle they offered (flame top, abalone inlay, active electronics, stereo jacks, coil taps, flame headstock, fishman acoustic bridge pickup, wilkinson bridge, my name on the truss rod cover, and a tweed case) and it only came to about 1,100 (+-) but the base model is only about 700.00 (about 100 bucks more than the epiphone) and still american made and built to order and in my humble opinion is by far the best guitar i have ever owned (and ive owned gibson les pauls, american standard strats, teles, a 67 3 pickup SG, and real jacksons made by grover jackson himself, american hamers, original esp and B.C. Rich custom shops) and the carvin smokes them all in sound playability and looks.

+1 on the tele...you can spend anything from 200 to 2000 usd so there is one for you.

they are versatile

they look cool

they are punk as well as rock as well as anything else.

very cool guitars.

check out the tele custom...that is the one with the humbucker at the neck and the single coil at the bridge thus giving you the les paul sound as well as the tele in one.

lol i really like the look of the epiphone les paul :p tis stylish

my old electric is a cheap squier strat, so im presuming whichever guitar i get will be a million times better than that lol

Do you know what you are looking for in terms of sound? If you do, then that should be a prime factor in your decision. What sort of music do you want to make?

i dont think epiphones are that great

Epiphones are awesome. My favorite guitar is the G-400. I have had mine for years and still find it to be the best all around guitar I have ever owned.

new guitar

There are a few good choices when picking a new electric. You have to think about what type of bridge you want. The Les Paul Standards have a stop tail peice. Your budget is also a factor. I would say with in the $300-$500 range there is Epiphone Fender Jackson ect. Humbuckers have a much fuller loud clear sound, as single coils have a thinner springy sound. The type of music you want to play I would stick with a humbucker+humbucker pickup style guitar. You also could get a H-S-H guitar and see what type of pickups you like. Don't go out and buy the guitar you think you will love, get one to learn what sound you love. Then when you get better you can upgrade to the one you know you want. I know some strats look standard and sound borring but when you get good, you will probably want one. The epiphone vintage G400, Les Paul Standard, Fender MIM standard HH, Fender Cyclone HH. Here are some good places to start looking,

Good luck! :)

dont let the green day haters bring you down.

there are alot of great guitars out there that people will laugh at you for bringing to a gig. 2 of my favourite guitars ive ever played were 2 cheap strat copies an experienced guitar player tipped me off on. they dont have to be brand names. i personally do not like les pauls, theyre much to heavy for me, and i just dont lke the way they play. but, that hasnt biased me enough to tell that there are much more viable solutions to getting a good les paul style guitar without going to epiphone. there are many awesome guitars out there that no ones heard of. those cheap beginner companies, every few guitars, they put out a jem. atleast thats what i think.

i strongly suggest you ask for the cash, or a gift certificate from your local shop, and go and play around. i agree les pauls look cool, but i dont see how people suggest them as beginners. i feel they would be a little difficult a guitar to get a hold of. strats are much easier plays imho. and if it doesnt look cool, strip it, sandit, paint it, stick lights on it, cover it in stickers, go crazy.

btw, billie joe uses a fernandes strat copy his dad bought for him for 100 bucks when he was ten. he also has a jeff beck humbucker frankesteined into the bridge position. lately he uses les pauls, mainly with p-90's i believe.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Schecter guitars are awesome.

I bought the Gryphon from Guitar Center. They usually go for 399, but you can get the "good guy" price down to 349 (just tell them it's your birthday).

The cool thing about that guitar is that its got a pull knob that lets you switch between playing on the 2 humbuckers (duncan designed, probably the best pickups you are going to get on a limited budget) or switching to single coil (like a strat sound). Humbuckers are going to be more crunchy, playing on the single coils of the humbuckers are going to have more high-end.

I love that guitar, got it for my birthday. Definitely check them out. They are sturdy.
