Choosing a fostex over the computer route.

I was gonna decide to have a computer upgrade for 700 bucks but then my computer just stops working. when I restarted it I listened to a song that I made using my computer with an audiophile soundcard, plently of memory and steinberg software. I won't be upgrading those three. I compared it to some songs made by someone else with the fostex vf-80:

The vf-80 recording actually sounded better and the computer recording was in 24 bit 44 khz! I've downloaded all your mr-8 songs and about 12 from the tascam 788 club and I still think that the mr-8 recordings sounded clearer. Now I'm starting to doubt all those 24 bit crap. Anyone else notice this? If I choose to buy a fostex vf-80, it would cost be 800 bucks because my grandma has to send it to me from belgium and its expensive there. From what I see, the vf-80 specs are good enough for me. What would you choose?

I think the VF-80 is an excellent choice, although you'll have to devise some way to burn your cd's unless you get the VF with cd burner built in. That is provided you want cd's. My daughter recently bought the VF80 and seems very happy with it.

I have a burner on my computer. can a burner be added to the vf-80 later?
 
travis - yeah, you can add the burner later. Problem is you can only use one of two makes and they are absurdly over priced. $800 is very expensive (the only thing that's cheap in Belgium is the beer!) - can't you buy one mail order from a website? They are about £380 w/o burner in the UK.

Everybody who has one on this bbs - including me - is delighted with it, from what I can tell.
 
I don't have a credit card and the only site shipping internationally is samAsh. They haven't replied to my question about an mr-8? I'll try to email them again. it's even worse here in the philippines. they're selling korg d12's and roland vs-840's for 2000 dollars. do you know any other stores that ship internationally and accept western union money transfer payments?
 
yeah, it sucks. whoever's gonna buy that thing for 2000 bucks is an idiot.
 
The problem is that to utilize computer software to record one has to purchase hardware to interface microphones, intruments, etc. with the computer. Often the interfacing hardware costs as much as stand-alone multitracking equipment. With the stand-alone equipment, one has a degree of portability not found with the computer software/interface. For me to have utilized computer software and interface I would have had to have purchased a new computer as well with a larger hard-drive.

Purchasing the VF-80 was a less expensive alternative.
 
VF80 is a great machine...

For a lot of reasons, not the least of which is portability. I just got back from a week away with the VF80. I couldn't ski this year, so I brought my gear and made a 60 second commercial, mastered and ready for broadcast.

The sound quality is excellent. The only way a computer could do this is if it was a laptop (not a bad option) but you have to make sure everything is configured just right.

Anyway, the VF80 is a really nice piece of machinery.
