Hey all !!

I plan to record a gregorian sacro choir with 10 persons. This will be in a regular acoustic church. I will be using a Boss BR1180CD Digital Audio Workstation for it. I plan to use SD mics in ORTF configuration. So, here are my questions:

a) Since I'm using a BR 1180 for recording and mixing, what mics should I use? Rode NT 5 or KM 184? Or any other?

b) Is KM 184 an overkill if I'm using using a BOSS 1180?

c) If not, should I use a PreAmp?

d) Is the NT5 pair considered as Over mics or they are good for choir recording too?

I plan to do several other choir and orchestra recordings. I even plan to have a Midas Venice in the near future. As soon as I can ( $$$$), I will buy a pair of Schoeps or DPA microphones. So, the investment I do now must look ahead....

I apologize for my English.... and thank you very much for your help.

complex

this type of recording is probably the most demanding in terms of equipment selection. frankly its difficult to make a recommendation as there are rarely cheap solutions.
i would consider renting some top line mics and pre's
for this gig. of the like...
coles 4038 or neumanns or schoeps and there are many others.
in preamps , there are many high end to choose from.
what i would do is try a early rehearsal with the choir and try a cheaper solution like see if a couple of studio projects or cheap chinese condensor mics
into an fmr preamp satisfies. if this works in rehearsal then great.
otherwise its the expensive rental approach.
very difficult call if you want the best pristine solution.

Hey manning1 !!

Thanks for your help. It's a difficult task really. And my difficult number one (after English writing) is to determine in what level of quality I'm when I use a BOSS BR1180 CD. In other words, from 0 to 10 where is it?

Let's say BR1180 CD is a quality *level 6*? If so, what are the *level 6* microphones, preamps, etc.

That's my first step and I need more input on this. Came on guys !!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas Evening !!!

A pair of hi quality mics can never be 'overkill'. A pair of 'level 10' mics will not harm you.:D

An ORTF pair on the 'sweet spot', will give you a great sound.

Start with a nice pair of SDC's right behind the conductor at some 10 -12 feet high.

I'm not familiar with the BOSS BR1180 CD, so I can't help you there.

Peace, Han

Thanks Han !!

I will do what is rigth.... forget overkills...

Health and Peace !

My guess is the Boss BR1180 is about a 5 out of 10... but, it should be good enough to make a pretty good sounding live recording. Of course you'd get a better recording with better equipment.
