I want to create very progressive, ambient music in a live situation and am wondering which low budget analogue synth to buy. Im really want to use it as a background instrument, for moody, washy atmospherics. Emulating a sound likestart of "Compliments" by Bloc Party. Ive looked at the microKORG but it seems to trancey and brash. I want it to have a keyboard. Thanks for your time x

Give the Alesis Micron a listen.

I'm not sure I know what very progressive ambient music means to you, but for my very progressive ambient dollar the Micron is definitely worth a look...

I'll agree with ssscientist here. Micron would probably fit the bill. It's only drawback is it's lack of range on the keyboard, but if it is mainly for ambient textures/background work, it shouldn't be a problem for you. You could also check out some of the older Ensoniq boards such as the ESQ-1 or VFX, for some really good pad sounds, or the likes of the old korg X or N series boards (I am personally quite fond of the N's). Korg Karma is also a good choice for ambient sounds (affording more control over the overall sound, then most of these other boards combined).
