CHEEEP MXL V77 / Nady 1100

Nady TCM-1100 is nice

I just finished recording a 37 minute straight medley with just vocal and piano a couple days ago with Nady TCM-1100 for vocal track and a pair MXL V67 for a steinway grand piano. The vocals came out excellent - have no complaints here. The Nady just happens to be my vocal mic of choice. In the next week or two after everything is edited, some clips will be up on the web. I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes it!

Anyone in Central/South Texas?

Is there anyone in the Central Texas AUSTIN/SANANTONIO/HOUSTON/WACO AREA that could mod a NADY 1100 or any other mic??
I choose suggested here for me. I've been highly interested in the V77 but obviously they are somewhat rare. I'm open to figuring the soldering process I just don't have any experience with soldering and would pay someone to do it for me or atleast would like someone to guide me through it.

Just received my v77, stupid question perhaps, but can someone confirm that this is one already has the tube socket in place, ready to swap out the tube. Mine appears to be the platiunum colored one, with a manufactor's date, i assume of 2000-5-10, would this be one of the earlier models or a later model?
thanks

The capsules are different. The one in the TCM1100 that I have is a 1" with a brass retainer ring. The capsule in the V77 is a 1.1" with the white ring...
I know the V77's capsule has a 3 micron diaphragm, but not sure about the Nady - it may be a 6 micron. Completely different capsules for sure. Any one know what ratio transformers are in these things? They’re obviously different too.

Nope. That's not a tube socket and it's not interchangeable. You will need to install a socket to be able to swap the tube.

All the chinese 1.1" capsules I've ever seen have the white retainer ring, which is a giveaway that it's a 797 capsule. The 797 capsules always sound better to me. The high end isn't as harsh and the low end is tighter. Although the low end is more pronounced in the "Shanghai" capsules, it's also muddier. You can find the "Shanghai" capsules in both 3 and 6 micron versions.

Don't know about the trafos for sure, but since it's a 12AX7 tube not running as a cathode follower circuit, I would imagine the output impedance is the same and therefore the ratios for trafos would be the same.

...if you look at the picture of both of my V77s, you'll notice the transformers both have "2000" dating on them (the one with the red label and platinum finish was my original mic purchased second hand in 2004...the blue labelled one which has a more shiney silver finish was actually MXL's last piece of house inventory stock which I purchased in early 2005)...all of the V77s I've seen (about a dozen or so) have the year 2000 on the transformers...I suspect that the manufacturing run of the V77 was brief, and that MXL sold off the run over a period of years to follow...I don't think the V77 was actually being manufactured for very long...I'd be curious to know what the total number of units for that model were (I might have to email Scott on that issue)...here's my pictures again:

...in the 2nd picture, you can see the newly installed tube socket in the top mic.
...in the 3rd picture you can see where the "797" was scratched out on the PCB (upper right hand corner of the PCB), leaving only the word "audio", which was MXL's attempt to mask the manufacturering source...both Studio Projects and Behringer proudly leave the 797audio markings on their mics (SP even puts the logo on the mic casing)...797audio is considered the best of the OEM manufacturers in China, having some of the better capsule QC as Phil mentioned...

...and there's another "second cousin" to the V77 as well...

...if anyone has one of the earlier ADK A51TC mics, I'd love to see pics of the PCB/circuitry and tube mount inside...according to the gentleman that responded to my email questions at 797audio, they manufactured the original run of TCs and the circuit was the same as the V77...the capsules are 6 microns though...I've never had the opportunity to compare the circuit designs between the V77 and 51TC...there's a considerable price difference between mics (the ADK is much more expensive), so it would be interesting to see if the guts are similar after all...any A51TC owners out there?...

Kidvybes, thanks for the reply. I was actually looking to purchase the adk tc mic before i started reading more about the v77 here. I think i got a great deal on a great mic. Where could i find a tube socket to purchase? Did you change out any of the caps on your v77?
thanks

...here's the link to the proper socket:

...and no, I didn't change out any caps...not having the modding skills of either Philgood or Flatpicker, I chose to limit my risk factor to the socket replacement (I have soldering scars to prove it)...the mic sounds great!...

Same for the 797. The 6 micron versions (both single and dual) are in the Studio Projects "C" series, and I think Behringer used them as well. 3 micron versions are in the MXL V77, V93, 2003, and SP "B" series - the B3 being a 3 micron dual version.

Another difference is that the 797s seem to need higher capsule bias voltages than the Shanghai's.
