this ain't hip-hop... ok now for some praise and constructive criticism
THINGS I LIKE:
i liked the song structure, lyrics, and chord progression. using a rapper to provide the punch in your middle 8 isn't breaking new ground and your song doesn't need it, but it works.
NEUTRAL:
the lead and rap vocal placement in the mix, i'd actually drop it down a tad it seems to overpower the musical content.
MY 2 CENTS:
i would change the piano to a clav or rhodes and put more melodic expression into the piano part. the single finger melody you play during/after the rap REALLY, REALLY needs more oomph. spice it up because i hear where you are going but you don't quite get there.
the drum programming is OK but something isn't quite popping. i wish i could be more descript because i'm not really helping you if i can't articulate what i don't hear. i think it's the snare (or lack thereof). maybe try a little rim snare mixed in with the side-stick you are using.
i'd bring up the strings in the mix a bit... NO! on 2nd listen that's not it. stereo track the strings using 2 different string patches and pan them wide (not necessarily hard L/R but wide).
THINGS I'D LIKE TO KNOW:
1) what mic did you use to track the back vocals, and how many takes do you have mixed in to create the back vocals. your lead is clean and your back is dirty.
2) what drum machine are you using? when mixing did you do a 75hz cut on the drum kit and thereby remove the bottom or is it just the drum machine itself?
3) in what metro area do you live?
