cheap sound card

I'm just venturing into the hr world and are currently just using the basic onboard sound card. I'm really only using my pc as a planning tool for a recording our band will do in a studio...

The problem i find is i get a heap of hiss and noise in the signal. I'm tipping this si coming from the internal noise of a pc. What i want to know is will adding a sound card help reduce this noise.. even using the line in signal has a heap of junk in it... Also is there a cheap sound card that will give me a clearer signal?

I’m using cool edit pro and it does a good job at reducing hiss however I’d be better off killing the noise before it gets recorded..

obviously you can't get great recordings from a soundblaster sound card. Although, I have gotten rather decent results. I used to simply run a mono-out from the mixer to a 1/4 inch - 1/8 inch adapter and into the line input of the soundcard. you didn't mention at all what type of micing or mixing capabilities you have. That could be half the problem. if youdecide to get serious though, you're gonna want to get something like an M-audio or Audiophile sound card to get a more accurate D/A A/D conversion (analog to digital).
 
yep yep yep forget soundblaster........ get a m-audio delta 44 or audiophile 2496 and start rockin, rappin, jammin...ummmm whatever
