I was trying to come up with some basic ways to record sound from a mic/preamp combination into a portable recorder, that could later be transfered to computer program, and still maintain decent quality. Will anyone reccomend a recorder that can do this? WARNING: I know nothing about recording:)

to get started you could use a minidisc player that records.

i was thinking of that except do you need any special connector cables for the mic/preamp

Check out the nice new thing from core-sound: CF-audio

Looks like a very nice solution.

Fostex MR8

Fostex MR8 costs $300.00 and is very portable. It offers USB connectivity and flash card memory connectivity. 16bit uncompressed recording quality.

wont minidisc be obsolete soon though. Or isnt it already

No, minidisc won't go obsolete and even if it did it won't matter. Yours will still sound great.

Thank Sony for their wonderful algorythyms.

I think you'll be very happy with the MR8. I'm using one myself and it is working very well.

THANKS GOD FOR THE SONY ALGORITHYMS!!!

wtever those are;) okayokay mindic player/

hmm that MR8 looks cool too. what would you say the quality is compared to recording on a good computer soundcard?

The MR8 offers 16bit/44.1KHZ uncompressed audio quality -- the same as a CD. Obviously some soundcards will now do 24bit recording, but whether that additional resolution is necessary is a matter of opinion. I would think the MR8 greatly exceeds most soundcard/computer scenarios that haven't been specifically set up for quality audio. But again, you really can go either way... If you go the PC route, just make sure the PC is configured properly to make this work well.

It's actually Dolby that first came with those algorithyms. Then sony used them in the minidisc without checking if they were patented... Then Dolby asked too much for the use of it, and sony stopped the huge marketting-engine for the MD...

Then came the DVD. In the designstage, dolby told sony, well, if you put our AC3 in it, you can have your MD alot cheaper, now wouldn't that be nice? So that's why we all know the MD again...

and you can just plug your mic>preamp> right into this thing? How does it compare to non portable recorders? thanks again for any input.
