Definitely be Shure to skip the Shaq! I want to do a recording using only SM 57s. You'd be surprised how good you can get with that mic alone.

hmm okay so this sm-57 will work good with the mic in/line in on my computer? i wont need anything else?

i can get the sm-58 for 10dollars more, would that be a better buy?

You'll need an adaptor that changes the XLR plug that's on the end of the mic cable to the small one that's on you soundcard which is 3.5mm.

Also make sure you plug it into your mic input on your soundcard as this will act a preamp.

alright, thanks, but which one is the best? i read that sm58 is the most used mic and that sm57 is more used for recording instruments.

I would go for the SM58. This is a more versatile mic. Also take off the windsheild on the SM58 and you have a SM57. It exactly the same mic but with a windsheild.

You'll need another adapter to go from 1/4" to 1/8" too.

Spend the extra dollars and buy the '57 or '58. You won't get much of a mic for $30 bucks.

i just found a shure sm58 for 50dollars used. what should i look for when i buy it? how can it be broken, any usual things to look for to see that its okay?

The 58 and the 57 are substantially the same mic. The main difference is that the 58 has a pop filter in the ball. personally, I prefer the 57 because of that filter. To me the 58 is a tiny bit 'veiled' compared to the 57.

well but how will i buy a used mic, thats my question now, what to look for?

Not a lot you can look for. If the ball is all bent up then its been dropped and you don't want it. But they can be dropped and not show any sign. They are very durable, however, so if it doesn't look too beat up its probably ok.

hmm okay, so check how it looks, take the cover off check the wires...how about testing the sound? something special that would tell its not okay in the sound-testing sense?

I too bought my first SM58 used. Dont look at the aesthetics for this particular product (since it will be used). Test it on a mixer and listen to it.

In any case if you've seen or held an SM58 it doesn't seem like it can be broken if you tried to destroy it. And yes, it sounds wonderful.

Sorry- it's reality check time. You don't need a mic, you need a job- really.Richie

i need a job huh? You havent thought of the fact that im studying? and playing guitar?

Somone mentioned pawn shops. I saw a spot on This Old House where the guys got deals on tools. They gotta have lots of music stuff. If a mic costs 75 new (sm57) then you gotta get one at a pawn shop for like, half. and there, you can get your hands on it, not like on-line. Or do something for just the holidays that gets you tips. When I was 15 I got minimum wage cleaning up at a fast food place. It was totally disgusting, but I got some change to buy some junk. I only worked there for 6 months or less. I also played in the subways in Boston. Homeless people dropped in more money than I thought they had. I wanted to give it back to them. I had a lot of coins. It was fun, the Boston subways are nicer than NYC. Does Radio Shack still sell a PZM mic? they wwere cheap as I recall.

Say, what do you guys think of Behringer's XM2000s and 8500 vocal mics? They're pretty cheap and I've seen some nice reviews on the net.

There better than the radio shack mics but not as good as the shure sm57 and 58. I would rather pay a bit more and get a much better mic like the Sm57 or 58.

The only good behringer mic is the ECM8000 condenser.
